The Expanse’s Laconia Story Highlights The Problem With Mars’ Plan
The Expanse season 6 shows brief glimpses of life in the Laconia system, which proves Mars’ plan is destined to repeat the same old mistakes.

The Expanse takes place in a solar system riddled with social and political defects, and as depressing as it sounds, Mars’ progress on Laconia suggests history is destined to repeat itself forever. Life is hard in The Expanse season 6. Between Marco Inaros’ Belter dictatorship and the wrecked civilizations of Earth and Mars, no one’s having a very good time. And though season 6 represents the darkest landscape thus far in The Expanse, things weren’t exactly rosy in season 1. Earth and Mars were locked in a cold war, while Belters were oppressed by both. Technology might’ve advanced in James S.A. Corey’s fictional future, but precious few are feeling any benefit.
When the Protomolecule’s Ring Gate opened in The Expanse season 3, the entire population saw a lifeline. A wealth of untouched, habitable worlds now accessible and ripe for the taking. A fresh slate where life could start over, free from the baggage of Earth, Mars, the OPA, the Free Navy, or any of the Sol system’s sins. One such world is Laconia, introduced in The Expanse season 5. Though Laconia’s name is marred by its association with the Martian rebels who plied Marco Inaros with weapons, many of the planet’s colonists are regular folk who had no part in its military’s dark deeds.
The Expanse season 6 reveals brief glimpses of life on Laconia, possibly some years ahead of the current timeline. Episode 1 introduced Cara and her family of scientists, while episode 2 expands on Laconian life, where scientists and engineers busily set about creating a civilization from their makeshift lab-cabins dotted across the planet’s surface. As Cara frets about a local animal she accidentally poisoned with human food, her father explains, “The soldiers called a meeting. We have to attend… all the settlers do.” Her mother offers more shady details, elaborating on how Laconia’s runaway Martian military are refusing to explain the massive Protomolecule ship hanging in the sky. Apparently, the Martian rebels in charge of Laconia have closed off all communications, and are refusing to provide settlers with any information regarding home.
These snapshots of Laconia make plain that the colony is rapidly heading in the wrong direction, and contradicts the spirit of traversing the Ring Gate in the first place. Already, Laconia is dividing into a secretive military power hellbent on domination and conquest, while those genuinely interested in scientific discovery are being treated as second-class citizens – tools of those calling the shots, rather than valued citizens. The worlds opened by The Expanse’s Ring Gate were supposed to offer a clean break from past mistakes, but season 6 shows Laconia heading down precisely the same path of violence and inequality that plagues Earth and Mars.
A grim cycle emerges. Mars broke away from Earth believing they could do better than a planet that carbon-ed itself into oblivion. Laconia broke away from Mars believing they could do better than a planet that tanked its own economy before the project had even finished. Now Laconia is making the same bad choices. It seems inevitable that the Martian plan for a Laconian paradise will fail, and The Expanse book readers will be fully aware that, for a planet with a name that sounds suspiciously like a brand of cough syrup, Laconia actually causes a quite a big mess.
The real question is whether Laconia is a bad apple, or proof of inevitable human failings. Ilus is the only other exo-system shown in The Expanse thus far, providing the setting for much of season 4. Ilus’ colonization began badly, with Belter settlers clashing against an expedition team from Earth, but the Rocinante helped clear up the matter, and Ilus soon began promising a brighter future. Whether the colonies beyond Sol can avoid repeating the same pitfalls littered throughout The Expanse’s history books remains to be seen, but season 6’s Laconia material proves how the intention to build a fairer, more prosperous world quickly becomes corrupted in the wrong hands.
