The world mostly knows the talents of Sebastian Stan thanks to his beloved role as Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He first played the character in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger before returning as the brainwashed villain in the sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Eventually, Bucky turned into something of an antihero and is now a full-fledged good guy again. He is one-half of the highly anticipated Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier but before checking that out, looking at his filmography could be fun. Using IMDb ratings, his best work away from the role of Bucky spans several genres.
10 The Last Full Measure (6.8)
One of the most recent entries on this list, The Last Full Measure premiered in 2019 before a wider release in early 2020. This war drama puts a big focus on some of the events after the fighting has ended, mostly taking place over three decades after the Vietnam War.
It sees a Pentagon staffer and other veterans attempt to get the Medal of Honor awarded to a pararescueman who aided dozens of soldiers during the war. Stan plays Scott Huffman, the Pentagon worker in the middle of it all. Though said to not be as dramatic as the true events it depicts, it was praised for having strong acting.
9 Logan Lucky (7.0)
Quality heist movies are all over the place throughout Hollywood history. One of the better ones in recent memory is 2017’s Logan Lucky. Directed by the always impressive Steven Soderbergh, this film tells the story of two brothers pulling off a heist during a NASCAR race.
Stan takes on the role of Dayton White, a NASCAR driver in phenomenal shape who inadvertently helps the main characters escape. Among the many things praised was the cast, which was led by Channing Tatum and Adam Driver but also included Riley Keough, Daniel Craig, Hilary Swank, and many more.
8 The Devil All The Time (7.1)
As soon as the trailer was released for Netflix’s The Devil All The Time, audiences were captivated. The cast featured some of the most talented names in Hollywood. Sebastian Stan was joined by Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Bill Skarsgård, Eliza Scanlan, and many others.
Taking place in a backwoods town, the story spans several years. At the center of it is Arvin (Holland), who gets revenge on a corrupt priest (Pattinson) for the horrible acts he did to Arvin’s sister Lenora (Scanlan). Stan is Sheriff Lee Bodecker, a dirty cop who has a confrontation with Arvin late in the movie.
7 Gossip Girl (7.4)
Among the earliest roles that Sebastian Stan became known for is his time on the CW’s Gossip Girl. Though not one of the main cast members, he did have a recurring role that totaled 11 episodes across three seasons. He played Carter Baizen, a rival of main characters Nate and Chuck.
During his time on the show, Carter hooks up with Blair to pretty devastating results and he helps Serena track down her father. Alas, he lies to Serena during that time, prolonging their search purposely so he could get closer to her. Once she finds out, she kicks him to the curb and he never returns.
6 I, Tonya (7.5)
Often known for the long hair he sports as Bucky Barnes, Sebastian Stan looked quite different in 2017’s I, Tonya. That’s because, for the Oscar-nominated film, he took on the role of Jeff Gilooly, the real-life ex-husband of figure skater Tonya Harding (played magnificently by Margot Robbie).
I, Tonya tells the story of Harding’s rise and fall from prominence using fourth wall breaks, inconsistent interviews, and more. Gilooly has a major part in that, partially coming up with the plan to attack Harding’s rival Nancy Kerrigan, for which Harding faced the harshest punishment.
5 Political Animals (7.7)
There aren’t many things better out there than a well-developed miniseries. They can tell a tight story in a handful of episodes, often with a satisfying conclusion. USA Network’s Political Animals was one of those, airing for six episodes in 2012, a year after Stan’s MCU beginnings.
The show centers on a former First Lady who is also the Secretary of State (Sigourney Weaver) as she deals with both political and family issues. Sebastian Stan portrays her openly gay son Thomas Jane, nicknamed T.J. The character deals with addiction throughout the series.
4 Once Upon A Time (7.7)
Another series that premiered soon after Stan debuted as Bucky Barnes, he appeared in a few episodes of Once Upon a Time. The show became popular for telling unique versions of famous fairy tales and putting fun twists on these beloved characters from throughout history.
Stan took on the role of Jefferson/The Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland fame. He kidnaps the show’s hero Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) in his first appearance, desperate to get her help with finding his daughter. Stan actually began dating Morrison after meeting on this show.
3 Black Swan (8.0)
A lot of people might not even recall that Sebastian Stan has a part in this 2010 film. Black Swan follows a ballet dancer who is desperate to be perfect as she prepares for a performance of Swan Lake. Natalie Portman won an Oscar for her leading performance in this psychological thriller.
The reason Stan’s appearance in this movie isn’t well remembered is that it’s so small. Portman and Mila Kunis’ characters go out for a night on the town before the big performance and they meet up with two random guys, played by Stan and Toby Hemingway.
2 The Martian (8.0)
The entire premise of 2015’s The Martian was built around one man. Matt Damon’s Mark Watney, who gets left behind on a mission to Mars when he’s presumed dead. He must then survive all alone on the planet as a potential rescue takes time to get to him.
While the focus was on Watney, many talented actors joined this cast including Jessica Chastain, Donald Glover, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, and Kate Mara, to name a few. Stan is among them, playing Dr. Chris Beck, the flight surgeon for Watney’s team. The Martian was up for many awards, including Best Picture.
1 Kings (8.2)
When looking back, Kings is one of those shows that feels like it was canceled before its time. Premiering in 2009, the NBC series ran for just a handful of episodes and received a positive response from critics but couldn’t find an audience. After just five episodes, it was moved to Saturdays and not renewed.
Kings is loosely based on the story of King David, except with a twist that it was set in the modern-day United States. Stan played Jonathan Benjamin, the crown prince of the family. The cast also included Ian McShane, Christopher Egan, and more.
