The Fantastic Four Sequel’s Worst Mistake Ruined the Silver Surfer

Fans of the Fantastic Four continue to be left disappointed by the team’s cinematic adventures; out of the four films made, not a single one has resulted in critical or commercial success. The first 1994 film was little more than an ashcan copy created on an extremely low budget, the 2005 film was a subpar comedy disguised as a superhero film, and the 2015 Fant4stic reboot was overly dark and joyless. But in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, a key change from the comic’s classic story concerning the Silver Surfer results in a massive missed opportunity to inject gravitas into a film that has none.

The sequel to the 2005 film is based in part on the legendary Galactus Trilogy, a landmark Stan Lee and Jack Kirby tale in Marvel history that saw larger-than-life figures like Galactus and the Watcher (of What If…? fame) threaten the Earth over the course of three issues. Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing all have their moments to shine – but do does Alicia Masters, the blind girlfriend and later wife of Ben Grimm. Her part in the Galactus Trilogy is perhaps the most important moment in the story…and unfortunately, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer replaced her with someone else.

When the Silver Surfer crashes into Alicia Masters’ home, the two have a conversation on the nature of Galactus and the Surfer’s mission. The Surfer doesn’t seem to understand that human life has value (he is a supremely powerful being who has aided Galactus for quite some time, after all), and Alicia protests. “Perhaps we are not as powerful as your Galactus…but we have hearts…we have souls…we live…breathe…feel! Can’t you see that?? Are you as blind as I??” It’s a powerful message that almost reaches the Surfer – but he knows he must serve his master before all others. It isn’t until later that the Surfer ultimately decides to heed Alicia’s words, break his vow, and save everyone on Earth.

Unfortunately, in the movie, Alicia’s role is replaced by Susan Storm. Sue is not ordinary – she’s a celebrity-scientist who has incredible powers – and thus doesn’t represent humanity nearly as well as Alicia. On top of that. the idea that a blind woman can sense what the powerful Silver Surfer cannot is truly poignant. Instead, the Surfer agrees to help the Fantastic Four in the film simply because Susan Storm reminds him of his lost love, Shalla Bal.

The film underperformed (sadly, like all the other films in the Fantastic Four franchise), and a potential Silver Surfer spinoff film never materialized. Now that Marvel has the rights to the Fantastic Four, one can hope the Galactus Trilogy will be comic-accurate next time it is adapted for a film. Until that time, the Fantastic Four remain in film purgatory – and the Silver Surfer has yet to grace the silver screen again.
