The Fantastic Four’s Costumes Are Literally Skin Crawling

When it comes to superhero costumes, the Fantastic Four go into action in some of the Marvel Universe’s finest outfits, but they’re a little creepier than they may appear. Although heroes like Iron Man might own more heavily armored suits, the FF’s costumes are basically wearable computers complete with universal translators and all sorts of built-in gadgets for exploring the universe. And then there’s the unique material the costumes are all composed of — unstable molecules.

Invented by Reed Richards, unstable molecules are “a configuration of unknown atomic nuclei and electrons” that Richards synthesized into a special fabric that mimics the physical properties of whatever it touches. Thanks to unstable molecules fabric (UMF), the Fantastic Four’s costumes can turn invisible, stretch vast distances, and burst into flames without being destroyed. Even if you don’t have superpowers, UMF is virtually indestructible and can protect you from bullets, lasers, and tremendous impacts without suffering any rips or tears. Later generation UMF costumes were built to shapeshift into different outfits if the wearer simply concentrated hard enough, as Spider-Man discovered when he joined the FF.

But while a panel in X-Treme X-Men #42 claims that unstable molecules “are as comfortable as cotton yet tougher than Kevlar,” you might want to think twice before slipping on these superhero long johns. In Marvel Knights 4 #6, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Steve McNiven show a scene from the Fantastic Four’s early years when they first began wearing UMF costumes. In the scene, Susan Storm complains to Reed that her costume makes her feel that ants are crawling all over her body. Reed responds by explaining the unstable molecules in their costumes are constantly breaking down and reforming to give them their nigh-indestructible, power-specific qualities. As a result, anyone who wears this fabric will literally be wearing a skin crawling suit.

It’s a creepy revelation that shows the entire Fantastic Four — not to mention the X-Men, Spider-Man 2099, and all the other superheroes who’ve been wearing UMF suits over the years — have had to get used to the sensation of millions of bugs constantly crawling all over their bodies. Hollywood actors have had to deal with some uncomfortable rubber suits and form-fitting spandex outfits to portray comic book heroes on the big screen, but it turns out that the costumes worn by superheroes in the Marvel Universe are just as hard to wear.

Then again, it’s always possible that Reed Richards eventually managed to synthesize unstable molecule suits that don’t make you feel like you’re stuck in an exterminator’s nightmare. The scene from Marvel Knights 4 did take place 10 years in Marvel’s past, and Reed’s had a lot of time to tinker with his famous molecules since then. Still, the fact that Reed apparently didn’t have a problem making his then-girlfriend parade around in a suit that was basically made of hyperactive bed bugs says a lot about his fashion sense. Mr. Fantastic may be the leader of the Fantastic Four, but Gianni Versace he isn’t.
