The First Seinfeld Episode Elaine Wasnt In (& Why)

The Seinfeld season 1 episode “The Seinfeld Chronicles” was the first episode to not feature Elaine, and here’s why that is. Elaine made her debut later in Seinfeld season 1, introduced to viewers as Jerry’s ex-girlfriend he remained friends with. Julia Louis-Dreyfus received a tremendous amount of critical acclaim for her performances as the character, earning the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1996. She was nominated in that category every year from 1992-1998.

Given how big a role Elaine had during Seinfeld’s nine-season run, it’s difficult to imagine the show without her. However, she was the one member of the core four characters who wasn’t a part of Seinfeld at the very beginning. When Seinfeld debuted with its pilot episode “The Seinfeld Chronicles” in 1989, Elaine wasn’t even mentioned by name. There’s a good reason why that happened.

When “The Seinfeld Chronicles” was written and produced, the Elaine character hadn’t been conceived yet. At the time, the Seinfeld creative team envisioned the female lead being Claire, a waitress who worked at the coffee shop Jerry and George frequented. Lee Garlington was cast as Claire, but she never appeared after the first episode. Reasons for Claire being written out of the show range from NBC executives wanting a character who’d be able to hang out with the rest of the main group to Larry David being upset Garlington rewrote scenes. Based on Jerry Seinfeld’s account, it leans more towards the former explanation.

Seinfeld was clearly trying to find its footing in season 1, with “The Seinfeld Chronicles” arguably being less polished than the episodes that would come in the ensuing years. So a case can be made the writing staff never really got an opportunity to develop Claire. On-paper, it seems like a quick decision to write out a character after just the pilot episode, but in retrospect it’s hard to argue with the results. Elaine is one of the most popular and influential female characters from a TV show, and her chemistry with the rest of the cast helped elevate Seinfeld to its position in the zeitgeist. Elaine realistically came across as “one of the boys” and fit in seamlessly with Jerry, George, and Kramer.

“The Seinfeld Chronicles” was the first episode Elaine missed, but it wasn’t the last. She also missed the two-part Seinfeld season 4 premiere “The Trip.” This was because Louis-Dreyfus was on maternity leave at the time. In all likelihood, if “The Trip” was produced at a later date, Elaine would have been included. So Elaine’s absences on Seinfeld differ from Kramer sitting out “The Chinese Restaurant” or George missing “The Pen.” She was never deliberately written out of the show for an episode. There were always special circumstances at play.
