The Flash Easter Egg Makes Mirror Master The Arrowverses Scariest Villain

A classic Easter egg in The Flash season 7 made the new Mirror Master the scariest villain in the Arrowverse. Played by Efrat Dor, Eva McCulloch has been more than a sufficient challenge for Team Flash. A weakened Barry (Grant Gustin) was outmatched by her in season 6, and despite getting the Speed Force back in season 7, he still wasn’t able to beat her on his own.

The Flash season 7, episode 3, “Mother” concluded the battle between Team Flash and Eva. In the episode, Eva implemented the final phase in her plan, which was to take over the Earth with her mirror clones. With an untold number of people in Central City being replaced by Eva’s “children”, Barry was hard-pressed to stop her, and was only able to oppose her after figuring out how to fully restore his connection to the Speed Force. Fortunately, their confrontation was ended without bloodshed. Eva, having realized the error of her ways, retreated into the Mirrorverse.

She may have had a change of heart at the end of episode 3, but that didn’t ruin the memorable, villainous image the Arrowverse was able to cultivate for her on The Flash. Not only was she a more than formidable opponent for Barry, but she was the also the most menacing of all his foes. Her plan in “Mother” was incredibly effective, not at all unlike the one that occurred in the 1956 horror classic, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a popular movie that’s been remade a few times over the years. In the film, the main character discovered that residents of his town were being replaced with “pod people”, cold-blooded, alien duplicates that were easily able to pass for the characters they impersonated. Part of what made them so frightening was their total lack of emotions.

The Flash was able to get across a similar vibe with the mirror clones, particular with the fake Cecile (Danielle Nicolet) that Joe (Jesse L. Martin) encountered in “Mother”. The parallels to Invasion of the Body Snatchers were directly acknowledged by the episode itself, as the phrases “pod people” and “body snatchers” were dropped in the show. It’s a fitting comparison, considering that both plans were similar in scale and how they were implemented.

Another element that added to the sinister nature of Mirror Master was just how well her scheme was working. That was a factor in Invasion of the Body Snatchers as well, because though the aliens could be killed, they ultimately weren’t defeated. The movie ended on an ominous note, and a suggestion that the invasion would continue. As for The Flash’s Eva McCulloch, the villain easily caused Central City to plummet into chaos, and was only stopped when she was convinced to reverse the damage she had done. Now, she’s back in the Mirrorverse, but the emotional scars she left on characters like Barry and Iris (Candace Patton) will linger on for quite some time.
