The Flash Every Arrowverse Character Who Could Be The Real Godspeed (& How)

While The Flash season 5 introduced the DC Comics villain Godspeed, the Arrowverse has yet to meet the real version of the evil speedster. Throughout The Flash’s run, the DC drama has not shied away from using as many super-villains from Barry Allen’s mythology as possible. Whether it is bigger foes like Reverse-Flash, Savitar, Captain Cold to newer additions like Bloodwork, Fuerza, and Psych, The Flash has had a solid variety of threats to fight. One of the recent ones was Godspeed, a character who debuted in DC Comics in September 2016 and has quickly become a fan-favorite over the years. Godspeed arrived in the Arrowverse during The Flash season 5 as part of XS’s future timeline.

In the eighteenth episode, appropriately titled “Godspeed,” The Flash explores Nora West-Allen’s 2049 timeline where she went up against the super-villain. While the Arrowverse introduced August Heart as Godspeed, who canonically is the DC speedster, The Flash is doing a new spin on the super-villain. Throughout The Flash season 6, Team Flash had gone up against brainwashed Godspeed clones that a mystery person had sent to Central City. The fifth one revealed to Barry that “the one who sent me wants infinite velocity,” confirming that the Arrowverse’s real Godspeed is out there. Showrunner Eric Wallace assured in 2020 that fans would meet the actual Godspeed in The Flash season 7.

While August’s name hasn’t gotten brought up, it points toward someone entirely different being responsible for the clones. But since Crisis on Infinite Earths soft rebooted the Arrowverse’s continuity, anyone can be Godspeed. At this point, The Flash season 7 will most likely bring in the real Godspeed after the New Forces saga comes to an end. It could also be that Godspeed ends up being connected to the New Forces somehow. While August may have been the pre-Crisis Godspeed, what other characters on The Flash could potentially be under the mask?

Meena Dhawan

In The Flash season 7 premiere, Chester Runk read Quantum Gravity & the Universe, written by Dr. Meena Dhawan. While the name may not mean anything to general viewers, Meena comes from The Flash’s comic book mythology. During Joshua Williamson’s run on The Flash comics, Meena was introduced as one of the Central City citizens that the Speed Force Storm had struck. While helping Flash train multiple new speedsters, Meena became the superhero Fast Track and Barry’s new love interest. However, Meena would later become a villain to the Flash, as she became the new Negative Flash in the DC Universe. Meena’s DC debut happened during Williamson’s Godspeed arc, which makes The Flash season 7’s Easter egg to her very timely.

Having the season premiere open up with Chester reading Meena’s book does not feel like a happy accident, but rather more specific. Wallace has talked about how The Flash will introduce more DC characters from recent years to help flesh out the Arrowverse series. Introducing Meena would play well into Wallace’s plans of expanding Flash’s world. It would be a compelling twist to have Meena be the Arrowverse’s Godspeed, especially as they have never had a female speedster as their big bad. If Meena turns out to be Godspeed, it will flip the clone’s idea on its head by defying the expectations of the villain being a male, simply because of the imposters.

Eddie Thawne

The Flash season 1 revolved around Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. the Reverse-Flash as Barry’s first antagonist. When Rick Cosnett was cast as Eddie Thawne, many assumed that he would become the Arrowverse’s interpretation of Flash’s nemesis. Instead, Eddie turned out to be Eobard’s ancestor, and by the end of The Flash season 1, he shot himself so that Reverse-Flash would never be born. Eddie’s body got sucked into the singularity in the season finale, which was a plot point that never got resolved. While Eddie has been dead for years, Cosnett has returned as alternative versions of the Thawne character. Despite his sacrifice, Eobard has managed to continue existing through time travel twists in the later seasons.

But the dead does not always stay dead in the Arrowverse, especially after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Because Reverse-Flash has continued to live on, it did make Eddie’s sacrifice a little pointless by losing the stakes. Since the singularity did take Eddie’s body, it would not be unbelievable if that somehow kept him alive or if Crisis altered those events where he became the new Godspeed instead. Eddie’s story on The Flash never felt completed when he shot himself, and having him come back with a villainous twist almost seven years later, would be unexpected. That would allow the Arrowverse to tackle the Thawne mythology from a new angle besides Eobard, while also having some emotional stakes to it as Eddie was a friend to Team Flash.

Post-Crisis August Heart

While it seems more likely that The Flash season 7 will have a new face for Godspeed, it is not impossible for August Heart to still be the real one. However, it would have to be a wholly rebooted version of August, especially post-Crisis on Infinite Earths. So far, the team’s theory is that August is behind Godspeed, but The Flash season 6 never solved that mystery. The 2049 that appeared in The Flash season 5 is most likely not the same one that exists post-Crisis; therefore, Arrowverse’s August would have to be different. Based on how August was executed in “Godspeed,” it feels safe to say that the new creative team moved away from that iteration for The Flash season 6.

Based on how August was executed in “Godspeed,” it feels safe to say that the new creative team moved away from that iteration in the following season. Assuming Team Flash’s hypothesis was correct, August has somehow sent Godspeed clones into the past, but with no explainable reasons. After Crisis on Infinite Earths, anything is possible, which would be the only way to reinvent August as a believable Godspeed. The Flash season 7 would also benefit in recasting August, if he turns out to still be the real Godspeed in the Arrowverse. Luckily, that is something The Flash has taken advantage of since Crisis on Infinite Earths by reimagining various characters or plots from past seasons.

An All-New Character

If Godspeed is not based on an established DC character, what if The Flash season 7 creates an original one? That would be an approach where it would be more challenging to figure out Godspeed’s real identity, if he is not anyone that the characters already know. It would not be the first time the Arrowverse created original players to take up the mantles of iconic DC villains. Establishing someone utterly new as Godspeed would allow the writers to create a new, unique background for one of Flash’s most dangerous and powerful speedster villains.

However, it seems the unlikeliest scenario, given that whoever is sending Godspeed clones has some connection to the characters in the present. Even if Meena Dhawan has not appeared on The Flash, it would be more believable for her to be obsessed with speed by witnessing Barry in the present, but from the shadows. Pre-Crisis, August never had a history with The Flash since Barry originally vanished in 2024 before Earth-90 Flash took his place in 2019. Post-Crisis gave them a clean slate where people like Meena, Eddie, a different August, or an original character could be revealed as the proper Godspeed.

Whenever the real Godspeed makes their debut in The Flash season 7, they will most likely be the final main villain. It will make a lot of sense if Godspeed is the big threat that Jordan Fisher’s Bart Allen will be helping Team Flash take on. The seventeenth episode, which will mark the show’s 150th milestone, will be Impulse’s introduction, whose character description did include that he will help the team go up against their “biggest threat yet.” Since Godspeed is, supposedly, also from the future, that would line up pretty well. Whoever Godspeed is, it will have to be a significant reveal, since they will probably be one of The Flash’s last prominent speedster villains in the Arrowverse.
