The Flash Is Going to Face Off With The OG Flash

Warning! Spoilers Ahead for The Flash #759

The world of The Flash is getting a little bit bigger in the best way possible, with the return of classic Flash speedster Jay Garrick, the original Flash and founding member of the Justice Society of America. However, the journey for as to how he’s come back and the first thing he does in The Flash #759 is a wild one, with several twists and turns.

Jay Garrick was the first superhero to ever take on the Flash mantle. Then, he and his fellow superhero allies in the Justice Society were retconned into living on the alternate reality known as Earth-2 when new Flash Barry Allen was created in DC’s Silver Age. Then, after the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, all Earths were merged into one, and Jay Garrick protected Keystone City, the sister city to Barry’s Allen’s Central City. Due to his powers in the Speed Force, Jay still has the body of near 50, though in actuality he’s closer to 90, as the Justice Society was retconned into having mainly operated during the WWII era.

However, during DC Comics’ universe reboot after Flashpoint known as the New 52, Garrick and his fellow JSA team members were no more, having never existed in this new continuity, along with future generations of heroes in the 31st Century like the Legion of Superheroes. Then, during the Rebirth and subsequent Doomsday Clock Watchmen sequel/DC crossover, it was revealed that both teams’ disappearances where the direct result of Dr. Manhattan experimenting on the DC Universe. At the end of the event, both the JSA and Legion were returned and reintegrated back into the continuity, with current characters remembering their existence after having forgotten them. Now, Jay is back and he’s ready to kick the crap out of Barry Allen?

Barry and Jay have usually been strong allies and friends, so why would Jay want to fight Barry? Well, in The Flash #759, written by Joshua Williamson with art by Rafa Sandoval and Scott Kolins, Barry is not in control of his own body. Eobard Thawne has possessed Barry, posing as The Flash. However, despite his best performance, he can’t convince Barry’s Flash Family that he’s the real deal, which motivates him to make the decision to kill them all. However, before he can get his hands on them, Jay Garrick appears in epic fashion, daring Thawne to come closer.

The return of the OG Flash (with such an awesome re-entrance to the pages of The Flash) is incredibly exciting, and it will be really cool to see Jay take on the current Flash, especially considering that Thawne is behind the wheel. Hopefully, Jay will be able to find a way to bring Barry back in control of his own body, but fans will just have to wait and see what happens next as The Flash series continues.
