The Flash ReverseFlashs Season 8 Return Reveals Comics Easter Egg

Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Flash’s “Armageddon, Part 3.”

Reverse-Flash’s return in The Flash season 8 episode, “Armageddon, Part 3” reveals a major comics Easter egg. While Despero, an alien who’s made Earth his home after his planet’s destruction, is convinced The Flash will cause havoc, the return of Eobard Thawne in the episode’s final moments shakes things up for the Scarlet Speedster and raises the stakes even more than before.

For the majority of The Flash’s “Armageddon, Part 3,” Barry tries convincing Black Lightning he is not to be trusted so the superhero can initiate the Injustice protocols and remove The Flash’s powers permanently. Meanwhile, Iris believes there is indeed something fishy going on with regards to Barry losing his mind and the incident surrounding Joe’s death. Her hunch pays off when her time sickness allows her to see particles created by someone using the Negative Still Force to change events in the timeline. That someone turns out to be none other than Reverse-Flash himself, who somehow manages to turn everyone against The Flash; Iris being revealed as Eobard’s fiancée in the future is the biggest shocker of all and Barry’s stunned face says it all.

Reverse-Flash has been The Flash’s primary nemesis for a long time; the former hates everything about the latter and what he’s always strived to do is make the Scarlet Speedster’s life a living nightmare. The Flash’s “Armageddon, Part 3” draws its inspiration directly from the comics, which sees Thawne masquerading as Barry in a bid to steal his life and marry Iris in his place. After Barry bests Thawne, the yellow-suited speedster travels back in time to try and take over The Flash’s life. He even tries to get Iris to fall in love with him and, at one point, nearly succeeds (though it’s only because he literally changed his face to that of Barry’s to pull it off). Thawne and Barry have fought over Iris’ affections, with Reverse-Flash becoming obsessed with winning and hurting Barry in the most personal way possible.

In another comics storyline, 1975’s The Flash #237, Barry runs to the future to get Iris back only to be told that being anywhere near his wife would destroy the world because she develops an illness that prevents her from physical contact with Barry. Reverse-Flash attempts to help (despite Iris’ affliction being his doing) and he wants Iris to marry him in return. Similar to the previous comics arc, Thawne is passionate about destroying Barry’s life and that begins and ends with Iris, who The Flash loves more than anyone. The Flash series is certainly taking aspects from each comic story to spin its “Armageddon” arc and Reverse-Flash’s return as Iris’ fiancé is the most obvious Easter egg in the crossover event thus far.

It’s possible The Flash won’t go the exact same route as the comics. The Arrowverse series has always managed to adapt comic storylines without turning them into carbon copies and the return of Tom Cavanagh as Thawne means he doesn’t have to steal Barry’s face to pull off whatever he’s plotting. However, it seems The Flash is doing a similar enough storyline, pulling a twist that many didn’t see coming. It makes sense that Reverse-Flash wants to enact a revenge plot after Barry beat him in The Flash season 7 finale. Thawne never did like Barry being better than him and there was no better way to make the Scarlet Speedster suffer than by killing Joe and marrying Iris. To call the events of “Armageddon” Barry’s worst day ever is an understatement after Thawne’s return.
