The Flash Trailer Batmans Bloody Cowl & Batsuit Explained

Eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed a shot of Batman’s cowl and Batsuit in DC FanDome’s The Flash trailer — here’s what this could mean for the upcoming DCEU film, explained. The first trailer for The Flash offered plenty of Easter eggs and clues for the Scarlet Speedster’s solo film, including the iconic Flash Ring and Flashpoint suit from the comics. One of the less-obvious images, however, is an ominous shot of Batman’s costume, empty on a bloody floor.

The upcoming The Flash is set to introduce some sort of multiverse aspect to the DCEU, which involves Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen teaming up with another version of himself — as well as the exciting return of Michael Keaton in the role of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. Keaton doesn’t appear in the trailer, but he does provide narration, and there are shots of an abandoned Batcave. The trailer for The Flash even ends with a shot of Miller (likely as an alternate Barry Allen) pulling a sheet off of what is most likely Keaton’s Batmobile.

The trailer sets up many tantalizing questions for The Flash (like if Miller is playing two versions of Barry Allen, or if one is a doppelganger with a totally different backstory and identity); however, one of the easier-to-miss moments is a split-second view of Batman’s bloody cowl. If one looks closely at that image, the Bat symbol on the chest of the Batsuit can just be made out behind the cowl, with what appears to be a boot on the right side, with fresh splatters of blood all around. While this certainly has sinister implications for the iconic DC hero, the context of the shot likely has to do with Keaton’s role in The Flash.

Based on the marketing, The Flash will see Barry Allen going to an abandoned Wayne Manor, presumably looking for Bruce Wayne. The trailer shows both versions of Barry (and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl) exploring the inside of Bruce Wayne’s home, as well as the Batcave — both of which appear to have been sitting vacant for some time, as evinced by heavy cobwebs and ample dust. Interestingly, the shot of the Batman cowl and Batsuit has a slightly different film wash color from the rest of the trailer, suggesting it could be from a flashback or memory. Given the suit’s crumpled position on the floor (of what appears to be an office rather than the Batcave), and the pattern of blood around it, this suggests a very-injured Batman taking off his suit in a hurry — spilling blood out of his cowl and boot in the process.

One explanation for the moment seen in The Flash trailer is that it’s a memory of the event that forced Batman — most likely Michael Keaton’s version (although Ben Affleck’s Batman is also in The Flash) — to retire years prior, explaining why the Batcave is now abandoned and unused. While the trailer hints that Batman is killed in The Flash, it seems unlikely that this particular moment would be from that event. It’s also possible that the blood isn’t from Bruce Wayne, and that it is evidence of some fight between unknown persons, perhaps an altercation over the Batsuit — but that seems less likely. Finally, this could be a somber indication that Batman finally met his match offscreen in The Flash — although hopefully, that’s not the case.
