Kaley Cuoco is basically a TV acting legend at this point. But which is her better role, Flight Attendant’s Cassie Bowden or Penny of Big Bang Theory?

Up until HBO’s The Flight Attendant came out, actor Kaley Cuoco was only known for her defining role as Penny on the long-running sitcom The Big Bang Theory.
Now that the series is over, however, the cast has moved on to other projects. And this one, which Cuoco also executive produced, is a massive departure from the world of comedy.
While Penny was a polarizing character – viewers either loved her or found her irritating – there’s no question that the best way to describe Cassie is, well, a hot mess. But which character will stand out in the long run for Cuoco’s career as her best?
10 Cassie: More Opportunity To Show Off Acting Chops
While Penny had a lot of funny one-liners on The Big Bang Theory, much of the dialogue was from the other characters. And Penny’s contributions weren’t really that major. She might dole out some good advice here and crack jokes there, but that’s about it.
The character of Cassie requires that Cuoco show a much wider range of emotions, from a woman full of elation to shock and horror, disgust, terror, grief, sadness – it runs the gamut.
9 Penny: More Light-Hearted
Sometimes, more can be said with a light-hearted role that requires the actor to manage the subtleties of a character. Without saying a lot, viewers could quickly discern exactly who Penny was and what she was about.
There’s nothing hidden with Penny. It’s all on the table. So, while Cassie is constantly playing a role to hide her pain, Penny is just Penny.
8 Cassie: Multi-Layered Person
There are so many layers to Cassie that even she isn’t aware of half of them. Clearly repressing a lot of childhood trauma and running from it by drinking, Cassie was constantly haunted by visions of her troubling childhood.
But then there’s another layer to her personality as big party girl. A third as a sister who is constantly trying to dodge her brother’s questions about her life and disregard his worry about her, and another as the flight attendant who just wants everyone to think she’s fine. Penny, on the other hand, is pretty one-dimensional. She has good and bad traits, but overall, there’s not much to the character.
7 Penny: Relatable
While a lot of people have been through, or are going through, the same traumas as Cassie, whether it be an abusive childhood or drinking problem, Penny is much more relatable to the average person. She’s a pretty down-to-earth girl from a small town who is trying to make it big in California. Sure, she has her flaws. But so does everyone.
She has a decent-paying job, a group of friends, and struggles to make ends meet and pay the bills in her average apartment. Cassie, on the other end, has a life that is far more glamorous and on the fringes.
Penny really only has one small group of friends who are also her next-door neighbors and their friends. Sure, she moved from a small town. But it seems odd she never made other girlfriends or even attempted to.
Cassie, on the other hand, has a very wide social circle. From her co-workers that she parties with often to her personal friends like Annie, family like her brother, and even friends in different countries, she has more to offer everyone around her.
5 Penny: Longer Lasting
Given that The Flight Attendant is a miniseries, chances are there won’t be a second season. The Big Bang Theory, on the other hand, lasted for an impressive 12 seasons from 2007 through to 2019.
Penny has become a household name, even if she never officially had a last name (until marrying Leonard in the end, which would make her last name, should she have chosen to change it, Hofstadter). It will be the role that will always define Cuoco.
4 Cassie: Might Open Doors For More Roles
Anyone who thought that Cuoco was just lucky to have been cast on The Big Bang Theory and was carried through by the other actors will realize after watching The Flight Attendant that she has acting talent she never had the chance to show off in that role.
The role of Cassie might very well open more doors for Cuoco, potentially in the movie world, too, from those who might have previously thought she couldn’t take on more intense roles. Seeing her captivating performance as Cassie could be what puts Cuoco in the running for more high-profile movie roles going forward.
3 Penny: Massive Paycheck
It’s no secret that the cast of The Big Bang Theory, including Cuoco, were, at one point, the highest-paid actors on television, making upwards of $1 million per episode. That’s something that Cuoco will likely never replicate again.
While Cuoco likely got a pretty handsome paycheck for her work both producing and starring in The Flight Attendant as Cassie, chances are it didn’t equate to the kind of dough she was making for her role of Penny.
2 Cassie: Gets To Show a Vulnerable Side
There were a few times when Penny showed a vulnerable side of herself on The Big Bang Theory, such as when she revealed that she thought she wasn’t smart enough for Leonard or when they discussed the topic of having children.
But Cassie has shown far more vulnerability, including in many of the dream sequences when she’s talking to the dead Alex. Penny has walls up like Cassie does, but she is, for the most part, open and honest and can sometimes come across as unfeeling. There’s very little vulnerability there.
1 Penny: Shows Off Comedic Chops
At the same time as Cassie gets to show more vulnerability, Penny gets to show more quick-witted humor. The two characters couldn’t be more different. And while Cassie might get overly anxious about something, Penny would just roll her eyes and deliver a snarky, sarcastic remark that she impressively came up with on the fly.
Some might say it’s more difficult to pull off comedy than it is dramatic acting. If this is the case, Penny would be Cuoco’s best role.
