The Fosters was a family and emotionally driven series. Never afraid to make the audience cry, some of the series best moments were tear-jerkers. At its heart, the series was about the family and how they were always there for each other. In the first two seasons, they were always in storylines together, interacting in some form or another.

Even if not every member of the family interacted, there were still heavy family storylines. As the show progressed, it broadened to place more focus on the show’s supporting characters and how their lives influenced or impacted the lives of the main characters.

Mariana re-joins the dating game, placing three guys against each other to determine which Mariana wishes to be with. Brandon wants to be with Grace but is in for a hard truth as Grace’s condition worsens. In the end, the final season wraps up after a five-year time jump, with Brandon’s wedding to Eliza. The last three episodes are used not just to conclude The Fosters, but also as a foundation to jump into its spin-off Good Trouble.

Stef’s promotion to detective brings the horrors of human trafficking into the series. While highlighting the terrors, it also sets up the season finale as Callie’s wish to protect others comes at the price of her safety. The fourth season is devoted to Callie’s determination to help prove an ex-foster brother, Kyle, innocent of a crime he did not commit.

Callie takes on solving a murder single-handedly, diving into the world of teen detectives. Meanwhile, the family strives to help Jesus when he gets a TBI from head injuries. However, the season starts with “Potential Energy,” an episode dedicated to the fright of a school shooting threat.

After a dangerous car accident, Stef searches for the person behind the hit and run that hurt Jesus and Mariana. For the first half of the season, Jesus is out of the house, away at boarding school, to focus on wrestling. In his place, AJ becomes an integral part of Callie’s storyline. In the second half of the season, Noah Centineo has entered the cast, taking over the role of Jesus Foster that had been played by Jake T. Austin. With his return from boarding school, Jesus is given a new set of storylines to replace his character’s interest in wrestling and other activities.

Season three also features the return of Lexi Rivera, Jesus’ ex-girlfriend, and Mariana’s previous best friend. Although Lexi claims her return is permanent, Lexi’s role is reduced to briefly running against Mariana for Junior Class President. After Lexi wins the election, it does not take long for Lexi to disappear from the series as Emma took the dominant role of Jesus’ love interest and Mariana’s best friend. As the season came to an end, Brandon and Mat finally premiered the performance of their senior project, a musical rendition of “Romeo and Juliet.” Yet, the standout moment of the season is when Callie is finally adopted.

After Callie discovered that the man who raised her and Jude was not Callie’s biological father, it became another hurdle to jump over for her adoption. Meeting the Quinn family, Callie is forced to make bonds with her biological father, Robert, and her half-sister, Sophia.

Learning about Callie, Robert did not make it easy for Stef and Lena to follow through on their wish to adopt. Instead, Robert fought to have Callie in his home, too, making her life more difficult. The season also shows Mariana’s developed interest in the STEAM club, and how it finds its way into Mariana’s dance team.

1 Season 1: 94%

Season one is by far the most central focused on the Foster family. While later seasons spread the kids in different seasons, the first season keeps the family unit together in the majority of storylines. It highlights Callie’s relationships with Stef and Lena as Callie tries to figure out what will happen to her and Jude in the future.

Stef and Lena originally planned on Callie and Jude staying with them until they could find a permanent family, but by “I Do,” they had determined that they already were one. The road to adoption is a long one, especially after Callie discovers that she and Jude can’t be adopted at the same time. Season one has some of the most emotional episodes in the series. The first season also includes the official wedding between Stef and Lena.
