The Future Trunks Saga Actually Makes Sense For Dragon Ball Z Kakarot DLC 3

A recent leak discovered by DM Gaming points to the very real possibility that the Future Trunks Saga will be the focus of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC 3. Although before this leak, most assumed that DLC 3 would either adapt the Universe 6 Saga or one of the Broly movies, the suggestion that Trunks may return has piqued the interest of many and brought the viability of the saga front and center. There are a couple reasons why this saga would actually make a great choice for the new story arc, and why this game in particular is in a good place to tell the story.

Perhaps the biggest Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot news since DLC 1 launch comes from DM Gaming, a popular Dragon Ball YouTuber who posted a video showing a United Kingdom based website’s listing for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s Ultimate Edition. The website, Fanatical, is both credible and popular, and formerly listed the contents of the Season Pass in more detail than other places typically do. Under the New Story Arc section, the arc is listed as “Future Trunks Arc: Hope!!” This has led many to speculate on whether or not this arc is actually feasible to appear as the third DLC, although the list has since been removed.

Dragon Ball: Super Story Arcs

Whether one loves or hates Dragon Ball Super, most will agree that it seems to heavily favor the use of tournaments as the main focus of story arcs. Of the five main story arcs in Dragon Ball Super, two are tournaments (Universe 6 and Tournament of Power), two are single battles against a foe (Beerus and Golden Frieza), and only one focuses on any story more heavily (the Future Trunks Saga). For this reason, it actually makes a ton of sense for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot to choose the Future Trunks Saga as the story arc.

Though the events of Resurrection F, Universe 6, and the Tournament of Power were definitely fun and interesting to watch, there wasn’t that much in terms of story and character development behind them. The stakes were high in some cases, but that alone doesn’t constitute a story. These sorts of things would make good boss battle episodes (or perhaps future DLC will introduce tournaments), but would feel empty as story episodes. The Future Trunks Saga, on the other hand, harkens back to the more traditional style of Dragon Ball Z, with hero and villain alike attaining new forms throughout multiple battles, surpassing each other over and over.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Cell Saga Mistakes

This would also offer DBZ: Kakarot a chance to redeem its Cell Saga to an extent, which is considered by most fans to be the most poorly adapted saga of the base game. A lot of great moments were skipped over during the Cell Saga, and perhaps more importantly Future Trunks hardly got to do anything throughout the whole saga. This rubbed fans the wrong way to an extent, so bringing him back for the DLC would be a great way to make him more relevant.

Future Trunks has always been a fan favorite character, so his lack of importance in the base game of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was a bummer. Although the character was playable again during the end game portions, he lacks the ability to use Super Saiyan 2 making him not as viable as other characters and there isn’t much to do in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s end game anyway. This arc focuses on him just as much as Vegeta and Goku, and could even allow him to get new forms and super attacks (like Super Saiyan Rage and Sword of Hope).

Dragon Ball: Super Villains

One rather peculiar thing about Dragon Ball Super as a whole is its lack of real villains. Aside from Frieza and Zamasu/Goku Black, most of the major enemies Goku and company fight can hardly be considered villains. Beerus isn’t evil, rather he destroys things because that is his role in the universe. Hit and the rest of the Universe 6 team were participating in a friendly tournament, so although they were antagonists, they weren’t villains. Finally, the Tournament of Power sees all the contestants fighting for the safety of their universe, making it difficult to criminalize any of them.

Though Frieza is definitely an evil villain, fans have already faced him down in numerous forms with numerous characters. This aside, if he were to be included, it would most certainly be as a boss battle episode like Beerus, but even then there is a potential that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot may skip Golden Frieza. With that in mind, the most compelling villain of the sequel is easily Zamasu, whose crazy plan grants him the power of an immortal god and of the Saiyan Goku in two separate bodies. Once the two fuse, things get even more high stakes.

Vegito in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot infamously snubbed Vegito and Gotenks, two of the franchise’s most popular characters. Between the two of them, there are only three fights they partake in, and all of them are against the same foe, Super Buu. Since there is no option to fuse outside of these fights, the only way the player can use these characters is to repeat these fights with the time machine. The Future Trunks Saga offers a chance for CyberConnect2 to allow these characters back into the game, as the Potara Earring fusion retcon which removes the permanency of the fusion happens during this saga.

Plus, players would get the chance to play as Vegito Blue, something that would be a rather incredible experience. If CyberConnect2 follows this up with an update that allows fusion to occur outside of story battles, this would certainly please many fans. Of course, there is still the problem that there isn’t much to do outside of the DLCs, but that may be something that is rectified by the time DLC 3 rolls around. Ultimately, fans will just have to wait and see, but it seems likely that the Future Trunks Saga will in fact be adapted for DLC 3.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
