The Game Awards 2021: What to Know About This Year’s Games for Impact Nominees

The Game Awards’ Games for Impact category celebrates thought-provoking experiences with positive messages. Here’s what to know about 2021’s nominees.

The Game Awards is an awards ceremony held annually that celebrates the achievements of games across a variety of categories. One of these categories is Games for Impact, which is for games that are “thought-provoking” and have a “pro-social meaning or message.” Unlike other categories that focuses on innovation and technical advancement, the Games for Impact award shines a spotlight on games that explore important issues and share powerful messages with their players.

Last year’s Games for Impact winner was Dontnod’s Tell Me Why, which features the first transgender playable protagonist of a major gaming release. Previous winners include Gris, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Celeste. This year, the nominees include queer narratives, as well as explorations of interpersonal relationships and an individual’s place in an often unkind world.

Before Your Eyes

Before Your Eyes is an indie adventure game that follows Benny Brynn on his way to the afterlife. The Ferryman asks Benny to recount his life to weave a tale for the Gatekeeper that would either allow Benny into the Gatekeeper’s paradise or condemn him to life as a seagull circling the boat. Through the game’s eye-tracking technology, players interact with Benny’s memories and uncover his life and the people who were most significant in it. With each blink bringing forth a new memory, the player is truly involved in Benny’s story. Critics have called Before Your Eyes’ narrative powerful and moving in its exploration of issues such as depression and of Benny’s relationships.

Boyfriend Dungeon

Combining dungeon crawler and dating sim, Boyfriend Dungeon is a unique entry in The Game Awards’ nominations. Players fight through dungeons in this urban fantasy setting with the help of their human partner who transforms into a weapon. Outside of the dungeons, the game shifts to a visual-novel format where the player can date their partner to increase their combat stats.

The game’s inclusivity has been praised since its launch. Not only can the player choose their own gender, but Boyfriend Dungeon offers available male, female and nonbinary characters for them to date. Boyfriend Dungeon does not lock players into a single romance, so those that prefer to explore multiple relationships are able to do so. The overarching story also tells a potentially upsetting but important story about an unhealthy relationship with an abusive, possessive partner.

Chicory: A Colorful Tale

Chicory is a 2D indie adventure game which sees the player take on the role of a dog — named after the player’s favorite food — tasked with recoloring the world after it suddenly loses all color. In addition to brightening up the world, the paintbrush can be used to solve puzzles in the environment and complete side-quests. The rich and reactive world of Chicory has been praised, as well as its treatment of themes like self-doubt and building a better, kinder society. The game strikes a balance between its light and dark themes to create a genuine, profound experience that isn’t overwhelming.

Life Is Strange: True Colors

Life Is Strange: True Colors is the third main installment in the Life Is Strange series, which has previously won the Games for Impact award. The protagonist is Alex Chen, a young Asian-American woman with the power to experience others people’s emotions who is trying to solve the mystery of her brother;s death. The game is based around dialogue and player choices that will impact the rest of the game.

The Life Is Strange series has been praised for its exploration of queer identities since the first game. True Colors allows players to choose between either a male or female love interest, or choose to not pursue a romantic relationship at all. However, while many games opt for the player-character to be “playersexual,” Alex can explicitly identify herself as bisexual. Furthermore, the game’s exploration of grief, loss and empathy through Alex’s powers helps enhance its powerful, tragic and cathartic story.

No Longer Home

No Longer Home is a point-and-click game set in a magical realist world. Flatmates Ao and Bo have just graduated university and will soon be leaving their London flat, with Ao set to return to Japan. The player follows the daily life of the duo during this period, exploring their friends, the flat, the things in it and their strange new beastly roommate.

Most notably, No Longer Home centers on two queer, nonbinary adults in a transitory period of life and shows the slow process of saying goodbye to people, a location and a moment in time. It captures the uncertainty of adult life for recent graduates both through its characters and its stunning style that bends reality just the right amount.
