The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo 10 Continuity Errors

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo tells the story of a Lisbeth Salander, a troubled computer hacker who teams up with a journalist to uncover to solve the case of a young girl who went missing in 1966. The original story was written by Stieg Larsson and published post-humously, becoming an immediate international success. It was then adapted into a Swedish film starring Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth. In 2011, the story was given an American remake starring Rooney Mara. Daniel Craig (best known for his work in the James Bond movies) plays the disgraced journalist, Mikael Blomkvist.

While the American remake received favorable reviews from critics, it is not without fault. In fact, there are numerous logical inconsistencies, gaffes, and minor plot holes. However, the most glaring issues are continuity errors. Even though continuity errors occur in a lot of popular movie franchises, they are particularly noticeable in this one. So, let’s take a look at the 10 worst continuity errors in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

10 What’s The Date Today?

Early on in the film, Lisbeth spies on Mikael’s email account. He eventually finds out and confronts Lisbeth, causing them to team up together. However, before this occurs, Lisbeth looks at an email with a timestamp of “2/1/06.” This could either be February 1st or January 2nd. In the very next scene, we observe a Christmas Eve party that is supposed to have taken place after the emails were hacked.

9 Did Those Photos Just Move?

Throughout the investigation into the Vanger family, photographs play a key role. Lisbeth and Mikael must analyze hundreds of images from the day that the young girl disappeared. Additionally, they must analyze the activities of various family members over the years.

However, in one scene, the photos and papers can’t seem to sit still. While scanning the investigation board in Mikael’s cabin, the camera lingers over a series of photos and post-it notes. When the camera cuts back to the board a few moments later, all of the photos and papers have been rearranged.

8 When Is Hans-Erik Wennerström’s Birthday?

Hans-Erik Wennerström is a wealthy businessman who sued Mikael Blomkvist prior to the events in the film. As the story begins, we see Mikael attempting to recover his reputation as a journalist following the libel lawsuit. Deep down, Mikael knows that Hans-Erik Wennerström is shady, but he struggles to provide solid proof.

In any case, when Lisbeth first Googles Hans-Erik Wennerström, she unwittingly finds some conflicting information. When his Wikipedia page first appears, it shows his birthday as “May 29, 1952.” A few clicks later and the same page shows his birthday as “12 June, 1951.”

7 Is Lisbeth Riding An Old Train Or A New One?

This continuity error is difficult to catch for those who aren’t familiar with the public transportation system in Stockholm. When The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was filmed, there were essentially two types of trains in Stockholm. You could either ride an old train (with old interiors and exteriors) or a new one (with refurbished interiors and exteriors).

In the film, Lisbeth is seen riding in a Stockholm train that clearly has an old interior. The next scene cuts to an exterior shot of Lisbeth’s train crossing another train. However, in this shot, both of the trains are new.

6 Does This Motorcycle Speedometer Work?

Once Lisbeth thinks that she has found the killer, she pursues the suspect on her motorcycle. When the camera cuts to her face, it is clearly lit up by the glow of the motorcycle’s speedometer. A few moments later, the camera shows the chase from Lisbeth’s point of view. This view clearly shows that the speedometer is completely dark and does not produce any light.

5 Which Operating System Is This Macbook Pro Running?

Computers play a pivotal role in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Lisbeth makes a living from hacking into other people’s computers, while Mikael makes his living researching and writing new stories about corrupt businessmen. As a result, computers appear a lot throughout the movie.

However, there’s something a little strange about Mikael’s Macbook Pro. When the movie begins, Mikael’s computer is clearly running Mac OS X Lion. Later in the film, it magically downgrades to Mac OS X Tiger. Based on the type of Macbook Pro he has in the film, it would be impossible to run the latter operating system.

4 How Long Can This Investigation Go On?

Time seems to be a very confusing concept in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. At the beginning of the film, there is clearly snow on the ground, indicating that it is winter in Sweden. As the investigation begins, the weather changes at various times, indicating that seasons have changed.

However, the timeline just doesn’t match. By the end of the investigation, there is snow on the ground once again. Based on various dates and events throughout the film, there is no reason to believe that Mikael’s investigation took a year to complete.

3 Is It Spring, Summer, Or Autumn?

The makers of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo just can’t seem to understand the weather and seasons. In one scene, Lisbeth is shown riding her motorcycle past greenery. The color of the leaves implies that it is either spring or summer.

In the scene that immediately follows, Mikael parks his car near some trees. The leaves on the trees are clearly turning into fall colors, even though very little time has passed. Shortly thereafter, the trees have no leaves at all.

2 Who Was Driving Here?

Mikael Blomkvist makes numerous visits to the Vanger estate over the course of his investigation. He arrives in a taxi during heavy snowfall. However, when the taxi pulls up, there are already tire tracks through the snow. Since the Vanger estate doesn’t receive many visitors, this seems like a textbook continuity error.

1 Did Someone Crash Here?

The climactic chase scene ultimately results in a devastating crash. When the driver loses control, the vehicle breaks through the wooden guardrails on a bridge. The story then cuts to the next day. However, the guardrails are shown undamaged.
