The Godfather The 10 Best NonMafia Characters

The Godfather Trilogy was a lengthy mob tale in which the lives of several gangsters were explored. However, not all the characters were “made guys.” Others were friends, family, or associates that were either caught up in the Corleone web of crime by no choice of their own or voluntarily dived into it with the hopes of earning more money.

Most of the non-mafia characters in the widely celebrated trilogy helped infuse various societal themes or served to add more depth to the mafia-related storylines that would have otherwise been one-dimensional. Some also helped humanize the mobsters, reminding viewers that the gun-wielding organized crime members desired the same things the average person does.

10 Kay Adams

The Godfather The 10 Best NonMafia Characters

Kay had a problematic relationship with her husband, Michael Corleone, and everyone noticed how little Michael cared for her. Their relationship was so weak that in one of Clemenza’s best quotes, he implored the future Don to at least say something nice to her.

At first, Kay Adams symbolized Michael’s desire to live a normal life. Unlike other mob wives and girlfriends, she was well-educated, having attended Dartmouth College. But as soon as she got married to Michael, she became a symbol of ailing mob marriages. On the brighter side, she was a driver of change, as she kept pushing Michael to legitimize his businesses, something he eventually did in his older age by forming the Corleone Group.

9 Johnny Fontane

The Godfather The 10 Best NonMafia Characters

According to Biography.com, the mob-associated musician, Johnny Fontane, was based on Frank Sinatra. Similar to the Sinatra rumors, Johnny sought Vito’s help in arm-twisting Hollywood producers into giving him movie roles. When one of them refused, he woke up in bed next to his horse’s severed head.

Johnny’s tendency to ask for help was problematic, but it showed how much power mob bosses wielded. His desire to get out of his first contract is what led to the iconic “gave him an offer he couldn’t refuse” moment that would be referenced frequently in future movies. This happened after Don Vito told Johnny’s bandleader to either put his signature on the $1,000 or there would be grave consequences. It was also implied that Vito helped Johnny win an Oscar.

8 Senator Patrick ‘Pat’ Geary

The Godfather The 10 Best NonMafia Characters

The Nevada senator tried to bully Michael, at first, when the mob boss sought gaming licenses for his casinos in Las Vegas. Instead, Michael denied him the bribes and blackmailed him.

As despicable as the politician was, he was a major reason why Michael became successful and stayed out of prison. If it wasn’t for him, Michael wouldn’t have gotten the casino or Cuba deals. And if it wasn’t for him pretending to have pressing business during the senate committee hearings investigating organized crime, Michael would be in jail.

7 Captain McCluskey

The Godfather The 10 Best NonMafia Characters

The Irish-American police captain conspired with narcotics dealer Virgil “The Turk” Sollozzo and the Tattaglia Crime Family to make an attempt on Don Vito Corleone’s life. His reason for being corrupt? His salary was only $100.

McCluskey was the perfect example of how corruption contributes to rot in society. His father (who was also a policeman) had specifically tutored him on how to collect bribes. What made the police captain such an intriguing character was his bravery. He not only worked with some of the worst gangsters in New York, but also targeted them for a price. McCluskey was even more legendary in death and his execution is one of the most rewatched scenes in The Godfather Trilogy.

6 Carmela Aka Mama Corleone

The Godfather The 10 Best NonMafia Characters

Carmela was loyal to her husband Vito Corleone, sticking with him when he was unemployed after being forced out of work by Don Fanucci to the time he became New York City’s biggest mob boss. She was not only a loving mother to her own children, but to Connie’s too.

Carmela brought a whole new meaning to motherhood. She never gave up on having kids and her loving nature shone brightly as she was always in her sons’ lives. She also had no problem taking care of Connie’s children as she explored Europe with her lovers.

5 Archbishop Gilday

The Godfather The 10 Best NonMafia Characters

Gilday urged the Pope to grant Michael Corleone one of the Catholic Church’s higher honors — the Order of Saint Sebastian. Pretending he had Michael’s best interests at heart, he tried to swindle $600 million from the mob boss by urging him to deposit the money in the Vatican Bank as an investment in International Immobiliare.

The “evil priest” is a common trope in Hollywood but the “Man Of God” seen in The Godfather Trilogy was smarter and more manipulative than those that have appeared in recent movies. He was a master of stalling, using the Pope’s health as an excuse as to why business wasn’t happening quickly. Despite being a priest, there were numerous lines he wasn’t afraid of crossing. He was even willing to poison the Pope when the pontiff threatened to expose his corrupt activities.

4 Connie

The Godfather The 10 Best NonMafia Characters

The youngest of the Corleone siblings was introduced very early in the first installment via her wedding to Carlo. However, that marriage didn’t last. One of Michael Coelone’s best traits was his intolerance for disrespect, so he whacked Carlo, and this put a strain on his relationship with Connie.

As a character, Connie was included in the trilogy in order to explore the negative sides of marriage in the mob. Carlo would frequently abuse her and cheat on her and when he died, she appeared happier. Connie was also a walking illustration of indoctrination. Having grown up next to mobsters, she started acting like them. In fact, she went as far as to murder her godfather, Don Altobell, by giving him poisoned cannoli.

3 Mary Corleone

The Godfather The 10 Best NonMafia Characters

Most of Mary’s storylines stemmed from her relationship with her cousin Vincent Mancini, the future head of the family. Her father disapproved of the pairing, leading to plenty of fights. Sadly, Mary became a statistic in the most tragic deaths in The Godfather when the assassin Mosca Of Montelepre shot her while trying to kill Michael.

Mary was a model of innocence, as for a long time, she was unaware that her father was a violent member of the American mafia. This enabled her to live a normal life without mimicking the actions of those around her. Through her, karma also manifested itself. Her death deeply affected Michael, making him remorseful for the first time in his life.

2 Apollonia Vitelli

The Godfather The 10 Best NonMafia Characters

When he escaped from New York to Sicily after murdering McCluskey and Sollozzo, Michael married Apollonia Vitelli. And though her marriage to Michael was short, it was very loving.

While Kay was the modern empowered woman, Apollonia was a traditional and submissive one. She was full of enthusiasm and unfortunately, this got her killed. Her attempts to show Michael her driving skills got her caught up in a car bomb that was meant for her husband. Her death had a major impact on Michael and it made him a more vengeful man, a trait that would stick with him till his death. Apollonia’s death also erased Michael’s ability to love, leading to a bad relationship with Kay.

1 Anthony Corleone

The Godfather The 10 Best NonMafia Characters

Viewers got to see Anthony grow from a young boy who was the only witness to his grandfather Vito’s stroke to an opera musician. He wasn’t fond of his father Michael and was disgusted by his cruel acts, such as whacking Fredo.

Anthony’s relationship with Michael was also similar to the one A.J. had with his father Tony in The Sopranos. Even though his defiance was annoying, Anthony reminded viewers that the mob lifestyle wasn’t glamorous but wrong. He had no interest in becoming a mobster. His insistence on becoming a musician instead of a lawyer like his father wanted also reopened the debate of parents letting their kids follow their dreams instead of picking careers for them.
