The Goldbergs Season 9 Will Still Include Fired Star Jeff Garlin

Jeff Garlin will continue to appear in The Goldbergs season 9. The actor has played Murray Goldberg, the patriarch of the titular family, since the ABC sitcom premiered in 2013. However, early into season 9, the show garnered headlines for the off-camera controversy surrounding Garlin. After giving an interview in which he denied being fired from the long-running series, it was announced on December 16 that Garlin had exited The Goldbergs in a mutual agreement with the production company Sony Pictures Television. The news came after an HR investigation into his on-set conduct, which several crew members reportedly found to be aggressive and unwarranted.

The investigation stemmed from complaints that go back several years on The Goldbergs set. In one instance, after a camera assistant complained about Garlin’s repeated use of the word “vagina,” the actor allegedly put his arms around the assistant and kept repeating the word to her face. And, in an example that is said to have occurred in the past few months, Garlin allegedly berated a female assistant and her husband, who also worked on the sitcom. Although the character of Murray has become less central to The Goldbergs over the past few seasons, questions remained about how the character’s involvement will be impacted by Garlin’s removal.

According to Variety, the plan for now is to continue including Murray in the remainder of The Goldbergs season 9 through the use of off-camera dialogue and unused takes. The ABC series will also use “previously shot” images of Garlin, though it’s noted that this approach will not extend to the use of deepfakes or any face replacement. Due to the fact that his character will still be a part of the sitcom, at least for the foreseeable future, Garlin will reportedly continue to be paid, even though he won’t technically be working.

It was previously revealed that Garlin’s last scenes of The Goldbergs season 9 were filmed in a similar manner. Due to the fact that Garlin declined a mandated COVID-19 test, producers decided to use a body double to film the actor’s uncompleted scenes. They would then superimpose Garlin’s face on the double, in a practice that the sitcom has used several times in the past. It remains to be seen how Murray’s absence will be addressed in the future, particularly if ABC renews The Goldbergs for season 10. But for now, the writers have at least bought themselves some time.

It’s been no secret that Garlin grew frustrated with the portrayal of Murray, as the actor mocked The Goldbergs during a stand-up routine in front of a large audience. Garlin has done the same in the past and it seems for the best, for everyone involved, that he’s no longer a cast member on the sitcom. For the moment, it appears that these recent events won’t have a major impact on the sitcom’s storyline or its cast and crew, but the creators will eventually have to reckon with Garlin’s sudden absence.
