The Goldbergs star Wendi McLendon-Covey says that the sitcom would never recast Pops in the wake of George Segal’s death, promising that the character’s absence would be addressed if the show comes back for season 9. Premiering on ABC in September 2011, The Goldbergs takes place in the 1980s and unfolds through the eyes of a preadolescent as he moves into his teenage years. The premise is loosely based on the childhood of series creator Adam F. Goldberg.

Segal played Albert “Pops” Solomon, appearing on the sitcom since its first season as the easygoing father of Beverly (McLendon-Covey). A war veteran with a distinctly comedic side, Pops would grow to become a scene-stealer and a favorite among viewers. In the wake of Segal’s death on March 23, as a result of complications from surgery, fans have wondered how the series would address the absence of such a talented and beloved performer. Now, as Segal’s final appearance as Pops is set to air, McLendon-Covey has provided an unequivocal answer.

The Goldbergs star posted on social media, ahead of Segal’s last episode on the show, to assure fans that Segal’s role wouldn’t be recast. McLendon-Covey also promised that if the sitcom returns for season 9, the absence of Pops would be addressed. You can read McLendon-Covey’s tweet below.

And no, we would NEVER replace George in the role of Pops. If we get a season 9, we will address it then. #TheGoldbergs

From the tributes that poured in the aftermath of Segal’s passing, it’s clear that he had left his mark on the cast and crew of the sitcom. The series creator said it was an honor to be a small part of Segal’s legacy. His co-stars, including McLendon-Covey and Sean Giambrone, also shared photos and recollections of their time with Segal. While the late actor had a number of credits to his name, across film and television, from Fun with Dick and Jane to Just Shoot Me!, he had obviously formed a bond with the cast of The Goldbergs over nearly ten seasons. Recasting the role would likely not sit well with both those involved with the show, in addition to its fans.

Other sitcoms have had to move ahead after the death of a prominent actor. Following the passing of John Ritter, 8 Simple Rules changed significantly both in terms of its story and how viewers approached it. When it returned for new episodes without Ritter in the lead role, the sitcom was mindful to honor the actor as well as the character he portrayed. The Goldbergs now, unfortunately, finds itself in a similar situation. But it’s good to hear, from one of the show’s stars, that Segal’s contributions will remain unchanged.
