Since it’s ignition in 2010, The Great British Baking Show has risen to extreme popularity. The contestants face weekly challenges, including a Signature, a Technical, and a Showstopper, as they progress through all the way to the grand final. Every year a new group of contestants attempts to wow the judges with their baking skills, and while the participants do change every year, as have the judges over the last couple of seasons, one thing has always remained constant in the tent: the bakes.

Over the years many bakers have produced some out-of-this-world cakes, breads, and plenty of other treats. While some have vividly stood out, some have fallen short, and some have been complete disasters.

10 Worst: The Baked Alaska

In 2014, one of the biggest controversies, #BinGate, took place when the contestants were tasked with making a Baked Alaska. Everything was going well until one contestant’s Alaska was left out of the freezer and then appeared to melt.

That contestant was Ian, who after seeing his dessert was a melted mess, threw it away into the bin and decided not to present anything to the judges. The controversy led to a social media explosion, with fans calling for Diana, who appeared to leave the ice cream out of the freezer, to be disqualified from the competition.

9 Best: Nadiya’s Fizzy Pop Cheesecake

The GBBO’s 2015 winner, Nadiya Hussain produced plenty of brilliant, and delicious looking, bakes on her way to the title. Despite her slow start, Nadiya was gaining more and more confidence as the season progressed, and in episode 4, fans saw for the first time how good she really was. It was a cheesecake showstopper, where the contestants had to produce three different flavored and sized cheesecakes.

Nadiya put her spin on the task by doing a fizzy pop cheesecake, with one flavored as cream soda, one as ginger beer, and the final one as lemonade. Thanks to her innovative ideas and the help of Italian meringue, it created the illusion of a floating can. The fact that Paul called it “ingenious” enforces how good it really was.

8 Worst: Upside Down Pineapple Upside Down Cakes

In the most recent series of the GBBO, and in the very first episode, the Technical challenge saw the contestants being tasked with creating six identical pineapple upside-down cakes. For one contestant, Dave, everything was going well until his cakes literally went upside down.

While placing his cakes behind his name on the judging table, another participant, Pharmacy worker, Sura, was seen trying to swat a fly hovering over the cakes, when she accidentally knocked over Dave’s bakes. What resulted was a messy collection and Sura actually winning the round. Thankfully Dave wasn’t axed from the show in week 1, after that disastrous moment.

7 Best: Steven’s BLT Sandwich

Mixing a savory lunch with a showstopper cake shouldn’t really work, but somehow, in this illusion-cake-based showstopper, Steven took the Victoria sponge to another level, making his cake look exactly like a BLT sandwich. While other contestants opted for a watermelon, a stack of pancakes, and even a bottle of champagne, Stuart’s sandwich was the most impressive.

Thanks to the creative use of white fondant and a spray gun, Steven decorated his chocolate and hazelnut flavored cake to look just like the BLT, from the slices of bread to the lettuce and tomato, and of course the bacon. It was definitely a memorable showstopper.

6 Worst: John’s Salty Bakes

In the very first episode and season of the show, a law student turned baker, John Waite, didn’t get off to the best of starts in the tent. In the first-ever Technical challenge, the bakers were tasked with making rum babas – small cakes soaked in syrup and rum, and filled with whipped cream. However, John managed to replace the sugar in the replace with salt, leading to a salty and sticky mess.

Luckily for John, he somehow only finished second last in that challenge and went on to win the entire series in 2012 despite his initial mishap. It’s fair to say John was one lucky man after that.

5 Best: Da Vinci Style Pies

In what was a brand new and unusual themed week for the bakers, the show introduced a Tudor week to fans in season 7 of the show. The episode began with a Singautre challenge of classic pies, then a Technical challenge making knotted Tudor biscuits, and then a Showstopper cake using marzipan.

The standout bake of the show actually came from the Signature challenge, where Andrew presented his eight meat pies on a turning gear structure similar to that of Leonardo Da Vinci. Making pies shaped as gears was impressive enough, but engineering them to actually turn together was another level of skill.

4 Worst: Mel’s Biscuit Collapse

If Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood were the souls of the show, then presenters Mel and Sue were definitely the heart of it. Known for their great on-screen chemistry and some witty one-liners, the pair were integral to Bake Off’s success, and also the downfall of some contestants’ bakes.

On occasion, they would help the bakers out when things got heated or the clock was ticking. However, in one instance in 2013, maybe Mel should have stayed out of it. While trying to measure Frances Quinn’s biscuit tower, she inadvertently knocked over the entire structure, luckily it didn’t do much harm as Frances went on to win the entire show anyway.

3 Best: King Of The Jungle Bread

In the world of baking, Paul Hollywood is known as the king of bread, and since his expectations are so high, it’s hard for any baker to get praise for their bread bakes. But, in season 3, another Paul managed to get a special shoutout from the bread king himself for his incredible bread lion in the episode’s Showstopper.

Somehow, despite the great design and flavor-packed bake, Paul Jagger didn’t win Star Baker, but the stunning structure packed with almond claws and fruits and nuts was definitely a highlight for the GBBO.

2 Worst: Ruby’s Leaning Tower Of Cakes

In the GBBO’s very first Vegan Week, the contestants were tasked with only using plant-based ingredients throughout the week’s challenges, and it ended with a cake-making Showstopper to finish off the unique week. Fan-favourite Ruby Bhogal went above and beyond with her extremely tall and colorful layered cake.

With layers of chocolate, lemon, and coconut cake, the cake looked certain to help her challenge for Star Baker. Tragically, whilst she went outside for some fresh air, the cake tumbled over and crushed into a sloppy mess. The cake survived, however, and still delicious according to the judges.

1 Best: Candice’s Gingerbread Pub

Known for her creative bakes and her bright lipsticks, Candice won the GBBO in 2016, and the week that really showed off her skills was Biscuit Week. After completing the Signature and Technical challenges, Candice went onto produce a jaw-dropping 3D gingerbread pub in tribute to the traditional King William IV pub in Bedfordshire.

Not only did it look great, but the masterpiece also had three different types of gingerbread, included black Tudor beams, pub regulars, an incredibly tasty lime jelly pool table. To top it all off, had a sticky ginger cake carpet.
