The Green Lanterns Are Going Down The Same Path That Ruined The Jedi

Warning: contains spoilers for Green Lantern #2!

In the latest issue of DC Comics’ Green Lantern series, the Guardians of Oa are taking the Green Lantern Corps down the same path that killed the Jedi in Star Wars. Having good intentions and a desire to foster peace, the Guardians have decided to get themselves involved in galactic politics. Sadly, this has already proven to be a very bad idea. Even after just two issues of the new series, this decision is going wrong, and things look especially dark when compared to the Jedi Order, who made very similar mistakes during the conflict of The Clone Wars.

In the Star Wars prequel trilogy, the Jedi made the choice to involve themselves further in the politics of the galaxy, rather than simply serving as keepers of the peace. When the galaxy entered the Clone Wars, the Jedi agreed to act as generals for the clone armies of the Republic, fighting against the droid forces of the Separatist Alliance. However, this ultimately led to their downfall, as the Chancellor was revealed to be a Dark Lord of the Sith. Palpatine ordered the clone armies to turn on their generals with the devastating Order 66, killing nearly all of the Jedi and destroying the Jedi Order, giving way to the rise of his new Empire.

Sadly, it looks as though the Guardians of Oa and the Green Lanterns are headed down the same route as the Jedi in Green Lantern #2 from Geoffrey Thorne, Dexter Soy and Marco Santucci. After hosting all the delegates of the new United Planets coalition in a fashion suspiciously similar to Star Wars’ galactic senate, a vote was held to add Oa to their ranks, and the vote passed. However, this ruling opened up one of the Guardians to assassination in the series’ first issue. Nevertheless, the Guardians are still resolved, and they agreed to give a third of their sectors to the United Planets Brigade, while also re-tasking several of their freed-up Lanterns to serve as military escorts to the United Planets’ own forces. However, it looks as though the retribution for the Guardians’ actions is far from over, as the Central Power Battery explodes at the end of the second issue.

Unfortunately, it looks as though the Guardians are paying for their decision to get more involved in galactic politics far sooner than the Jedi had to. Now that their main source of power has been obliterated, the very future of the Green Lantern Corps is at risk. As a result, it’s going to be really interesting to see where the Green Lanterns go from here in the DC Universe, and if they’ll even be able to continue at all.

Just like the Jedi Order in Star Wars, the Green Lanterns’ decision to get more involved in the political affairs of the DC Universe have overextended the Corps and led it quickly to ruin. It would have been far better for both parties had they just stayed the course, serving as protectors on their own terms, respecting intergalactic law without attempting to become part of the mechanisms that define it. Here’s hoping the Green Lanterns find a way to rebuild in future issues of the series from DC Comics.
