The Hunger Games is a franchise that captivated the world and one we dearly miss. The series’ protagonist Katniss Everdeen, the girl on fire, captured everyone’s heart when she bravely volunteered to be a tribute in place of her sister. This set off a chain of events that would make her both liked and desired by those around her.

While being the capitol’s sweetheart, Katniss was also Peeta’s. Peeta was the sweet baker boy from her district. He was soft-natured which complimented Katniss’s strong and sometimes cold personality. Katniss was always protective of Peeta and by the end of Mockingjay – Part II, she had fallen for him as he had over the years.

However, there have been many people along the way who have also been impressed by Katniss and who she could have ended up with other than Peeta. If things happened differently, here are 10 other characters Katniss could have ended up with after the events of the final movie.

Please note, this article will not solely focus on romantic pairings.

10 President Snow

It may not be anyone’s first guest, but given President Snow’s obsession with Katniss, this could have been a fair pairing. Despite President Snow and Katniss being arch-nemesis, the two are also fairly similar in character; both are ambitious and leaders in an unruly and unfair world.

They both seem to be very observant of each other and aware of the other’s strengths and weaknesses. If the two had been on friendlier terms, things would have most definitely ended differently. Katniss could have infiltrated the Capitol from within, sparing the deaths of many and perhaps placing Katniss herself at the head of the capitol.

9 Plutarch Heavensbee

Head game maker Plutarch Heavensbee was also a self-proclaimed fan of Katniss. Though he signed up as a game maker to lead the revolution, Plutarch once stated that it was Katniss who ‘inspired’ him to volunteer. Plutarch is also the one to convince President Alma Coin to employ Katniss as the Mockingjay by constantly vouching for her even when she goes against the president’s orders.

Plutarch and Katniss are both skilled and effective in creating a new world even if it means going against the current leadership. As a pairing, Katniss and Plutarch could have established a new system.

8 Beetee

Katniss was fond of Beetee since she first met him at the tributes training center in the Quarter Quell. Beetee is not only a genius but he uses his intelligence to undermine the capitol and help Katniss.

Beetee was also loyal and worked to protect Katniss and the other tributes through what he was doing. He also had a quiet and calm personality, complimenting Katniss’s forwardness and vigor. The two could have also had a happily ever after with genius and ‘hunter’ kids, either in Katniss’ District 12 or Beetee’s District 3.

7 Effie Trinket

Effie Trinket has always been The Hunger Games’ most lovable character. She has shown to be truly concerned about the tributes including Katniss. Katniss and Effie are polar opposites. Whilst Katniss is defiant towards the capitol and definitely aware of the effects of this regime, Effie, for the most part, seemed somewhat oblivious to the damage happening around her.

However, this could be a good thing when considering a relationship between the two. As seen through her relationship with Peeta, Katniss benefits from having a softer personality around her. And who better to give her that than the bubbly and nonchalant Effie? Effie also accompanied Katniss through all seasons of the games and developed a good idea of her personality traits.

6 Boggs

Boggs was introduced in the first Mockingjay installment as Katniss’ personal bodyguard. He was not only a soldier but also Katniss’ friend and mentor. Boggs not only reveres Katniss but also has her best interest at heart even at the orders of President Coin.

Katniss simultaneously respected Boggs’ authority and was even entrusted with his command upon his death. Katniss and Boggs also seemed to have a perfect idea of who the real enemy was and of the importance of the work they were doing by leading the revolution.

5 Haymitch

Haymitch’s relationship with Katniss has always been complicated. At first, both Katniss and Peeta saw him as this drunk mentor who was just trying to bury the next set of tributes. However, Katniss’ tenacious personality won Haymitch over by the beginning of the first games and he worked hard to help her once she was inside the arena.

Haymitch not only understands Katniss’s predicaments but is also able to hit her with the harsh realities of their situation. There were many moments where Haymitch had to demonstrate tough love towards her which shows that if Katniss and Haymitch had ended up together, she would have been in good hands.

4 Cinna

Since the beginning, Cinna is fond of Katniss. He not only deems her as being brave but also selflessly inspiring. Cinna goes to great lengths to make a statement out of Katniss’ outfits, consolidating her position as “the girl on fire.”

Cinna always made sure Katniss not only looked her best but felt her best with his encouraging words and nods to her. It can also be said that Cinna was one of the only trustworthy people Katniss had a friendship with while in the Capitol and whose unwavering support she had. Had he survived, Cinna would have made the perfect companion for Katniss!

3 Johanna Mason

Johanna Mason is one of The Hunger Games’ most interesting characters. Although she comes off as stand-offish at first, Johanna is really a team player, even helping to facilitate the revolution. While she has nothing to lose, one must question whether or not her commitment to saving Katniss is due to ulterior (romantic) motives.

Whether or not she has a little crush on Katniss, the two would have made a ferocious and determined pair. After all, who better to sharpen Katniss’ arrows than Johanna Mason

2 Finnick Odair

Another fan favorite, Finnick Odair. Since the beginning, Finnick has shown his interest in the Mockingjay, recklessly flirting with her at their first meeting and continuously throughout the games. Despite being quite the charmer, Katniss wouldn’t fall for Mr. Odair’s gestures.

However, a Katniss and Finnick union does not only make sense but seems fitting given that they both became objects of the capitol and President Snow. Katniss and Finnick were both leaders and important figures in the revolution, and they could have made for a perfect union.

1 Gale

Gale Hawthorn is the obvious pick when it comes to choosing an alternative partner for Katniss. Ever since the beginning of the franchise, fans have been reeling over the Team Peeta Vs Team Gale narrative. The latter obviously lost but not without dropping hints of his feelings for Katniss here and there.

Even throughout the second film, Katniss and Gale’s titillating romance still kept viewers on the edge of their seats despite the books already revealing the outcome of their romance. Aside from being Katniss’ best friend, confidant, and part-time lover, Gale is the perfect choice for who should have been with Katniss if there were no Peeta.
