While Katniss Everdeen might be the protagonist and main character of The Hunger Games, just like all heroes, she needs many other people to help and support her along the way. Katniss has family and friends that help her, but she’s also in a position where having mentors that help her protect herself is essential.

Haymitch is one of Katniss’ main mentors throughout the series as he provides her with guidance as a tribute in the games, but Cinna is also an extremely influential mentor figure for her.

10 Cinna: He had planned ahead to support her even if he died

One of the most touching but also heartbreaking things about Cinna is how he designs an outfit for Katniss to wear in the war that he knows is coming.

He had started sketching this out before he died, and he likely knew that he might not make it long enough to be there to help. This shows how much he was always thinking about both Katniss and about the rebellion.

9 Haymitch: Because he understood what it was like to be in the games

Cinna was a great mentor in the sense that he knew so much about the Capitol, but as far as helping Katniss survive, Haymitch was more helpful in the games.

He had won a Hunger Games himself, so he could provide her help and get her sponsors to help her survive. This made him very valuable and indispensable to Katniss as a mentor.

The personalities of Cinna and Haymitch were vastly different. Cinna was very likable, calm, and easy to get along with as a person while Haymitch was rude and uncaring of what other people thought.

While both of these personalities have their strengths, the fact that Katniss and Haymitch respected each other so much made him a perfect mentor figure for her.

Haymitch and Katniss don’t get along very well at all in the first book, and they have many arguments and issues with each other going forward. However, Haymitch is often hard on her in order to help her survive.

While she might not always appreciate everything that he does to help her, and sometimes he is really abrasive, he did believe that she could win and was mostly always trying to make that happen.

Having a mentor that pushes you to succeed and is hard on you has its place, but there’s something extremely valuable about having a person who offers you comfort.

When Cinna was around, he always told her that he believed in her and did so in a way that provided a lot of support for Katniss. It’s clear that this meant a lot to her.

5 Haymitch: Because he knew he would have to push Katniss sometimes

There were many times when Katniss couldn’t stand Haymitch, but in their own way, they did understand each other.

Haymitch knew that Katniss would need to be pushed and that she was really stubborn. He knew that she would often make decisions that could get her in big trouble in the games, so he provided the pushback she needed to win.

4 Cinna: He was the one who turned Katniss into the girl on fire

Cinna was such an influential figure for Katniss and for the story as a whole because he was the one who turned Katniss into a symbol of hope. He first did this by making her into the girl on fire for the first games, and then he took this even further by turning her into the symbol of the Mockingjay before the Quarter Quell.

Cinna understood the importance of the rebellion and of how symbols provide meaning and inspire movements.

3 Haymitch: They grew to appreciate one another over time

Haymitch and Katniss have a difficult relationship overall, but they also respect each other. They are both rather rough around the edges, and they can see the flaws in one another.

While this doesn’t always make them the best of friends, they do grow to care about one another, and being able to see one another’s flaws is actually a good thing in a mentor relationship.

2 Cinna: Because he understood Katniss from the start

While Haymitch and Katniss had to figure out their relationship, Cinna and Katniss understood and loved each other from the start.

It’s clear that Katniss felt comfortable around Cinna and that she cared for him deeply, and he also cared a lot about her. They often felt like friends, and when he died, it was such a traumatic thing for fans and Katniss.

1 Haymitch: He was able to mentor for a longer period of time

Because of Haymitch’s role as mentor to Katniss and Peeta, he was able to be there for them and help them a lot.

Cinna’s role was a bit different as a stylist, and his life was also cut short in such a cruel way. This wasn’t his fault at all, but it just means that in practicality that Haymitch could help Katniss more.
