Apocalyptic and dystopian flicks are definitely a popular trend in Hollywood, and each continues to blow fans away by making it big at the box office. Of course, all fans of this genre also know that teen drama series with an apocalyptic story-line never get old – because there are so many out there.

Whether fans love Katniss Everdeen or can’t get enough of suspenseful maze running, it’s time to finally stack up these films against each other. Some have impressed the critics, and some, well, haven’t. So, here are 10 teen dystopian film franchises, ranked, according to IMDb.

10 The 5th Wave (2016) – 5.2

This dystopian flick stars Chloë Grace Moretz and tells the story of alien attacks – that come in waves. This flick is based on another popular teen drama series, but this was the only flick from the trilogy to hit the big screen.

With a 5.2, The 5th Wave definitely isn’t the best on the list, but it is worthy of some entertaining and action-packed scenes. However, it still takes the bottom slot on this list.

9 The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones (2013) – 5.9

Lily Collins is at the forefront of this fantasy action flick and tells the story of a group of warriors who are tasked to keep out demons from the world – and are faced with the alternate reality of the Shadow World.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was highly anticipated since it is based off a best-seller book series. According to IMDb, though, it fell a bit short.

8 Inkheart (2008) – 6.1

This is the oldest movie on the list, and it’s probably bursting with nostalgia for all those adults that remember reading this series and heading to the theaters to see it play out on the big screen.

Inkheart follows a teenage girl and her father – who can bring all characters to life by reading books. Together, they must stop a villain from destroying the world. With Brendan Fraser and Andy Serkis, this is a throwback that was rated decently.

7 The Giver (2014) – 6.5

This popular book series finally made it to the movies in 2014, with Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, and Brenton Thwaites at the forefront. The Giver takes place in a ‘perfect’ community, where a young boy is chosen to receive all the pain of the real world.

Like most of them, this flick is based on the series by Lois Lowry, but fans have yet to receive another installment on the big screen. Also, a 6.5 is hardly something to frown at.

6 City Of Ember (2008) – 6.5

Way back in 2008, City of Ember hit the theater with Saoirse Ronan, Toby Jones, and Bill Murray at the forefront. In a dystopian future, scientists have created a world of lights, its generator is failing – and they must escape from their city.

With a 6.5/10, this film adaptation was definitely not a disappointment. However, it certainly slid through the cracks when compared to the other series on this list.

5 Ender’s Game (2013) – 6.6

This action-adventure has Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, and Hailee Steinfeld. Ender’s Game takes place in the future, where there is a military created to protect the world from an alien race.

With technology, youth, drama, and action, this movie is definitely worthy of binging for an entertaining experience. This young adult novel certainly got a decent film adaptation.

4 Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children (2016) – 6.7

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children isn’t exactly a world dystopian flick, but the world of Miss Peregrine and her children is almost a separate reality – that’s definitely in shambles. With Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, and Samuel L. Jackson, this hit book series finally got its own flick.

These children with special powers aren’t as safe as they think, and this flick is full of suspense and adventure. With a 6.7/10, it modestly impressed its fans.

3 Divergent (2014) – 6.7

Divergent is the most commonly compared with The Hunger Games series, for these both star powerful female leads, a corrupt government, and separated ‘faction’ type ordeals. While this popular book series finally made it to the big screen, it was a mediocre score with critics and audiences.

At the very least, Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Theo James, and the rest of this stellar cast certainly brought a riveting and entertaining experience to this popular dystopian story.

2 The Maze Runner (2014) – 6.8

The Maze Runner is a riveting and mysterious series about a group of young teens being stuck in a field – with a maze being their only way out. With Dylan O’Brien, this movie definitely blew the socks off of every teen who went to see it on the big screen.

Unlike most on the list, this entire novel series actually made it to the big screen. With each passing flick, fans still anticipated a suspenseful and entertaining time. With a 6.8/10, this dystopian drama takes second place.

1 The Hunger Games (2012) – 7.2

This series is without a doubt one of the most popular on the list. From jet-setting Jennifer Lawrence’s career to becoming one of the most iconic Halloween costumes out there, Katniss Everdeen and the characters from this series have definitely become well-loved.

The first installment of The Hunger Games franchise received an impressive 7.2/10 on IMDb. What is probably not a surprise is that the biggest hit on this list also received the best reviews from the critics – and it deserves to be #1 on this list.
