The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 Story Recap

Here’s a story recap for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. The 2010s was a busy era for adaptations of YA novels, especially in the dystopian sci-fi category. This includes The Maze Runner trilogy starring Dylan O’Brien, The Giver, and The Divergent Series. There were also huge, non-apocalyptic hits like The Fault In Our Stars, but the genre seemed to burn out in popularity due to overexposure. This is best seen with Divergent: Allegiant, which was supposed to be the first of a two-part finale; the final sequel was cancelled due to the low returns of Allegiant.

Undoubtedly the biggest of the dystopian YA movie trend was The Hunger Games. Based on the novel trilogy by author Suzanne Collins, this series focused on Katniss, a teenager forced to take part in a televised game of death in the country of Panem. After winning the first game, she becomes a symbol of hope to the poor Districts of Panem, marking her as dangerous by President Snow. The first movie helped make Jennifer Lawrence a star and three sequels followed. Even this franchise wasn’t immune to the YA downturn, with the final chapter The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 being the lowest-grossing.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 picks up quickly after the cliffhanger ending of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. In that entry, Katniss and love interest Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) were forced – alongside other Hunger Games victors – to compete in the 75th Hunger Games as a special event. The movie climaxes with Katniss shattering the dome surrounding the arena; she’s retrieved by rebels who reveal their plan was to rescue her and make her a symbol of the rebellion. Unfortunately, Peeta wasn’t saved and was taken hostage by the Capitol and Katniss’ home District 12 was bombed by Snow in revenge.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 sees Katniss taken to District 13 to meet Alma Coin (Julianne Moore), who is leading the rebellion. Coin is only really interested in Katniss as a propaganda tool and tasks her with making videos for the rebellion to inspire the uprising. After seeing Peeta used by Snow for a propaganda interview on TV, she agrees on the condition Coin finds and rescues him. Her other love interest Gale (Liam Hemsworth) becomes a bodyguard and so does Coin’s right-hand man Boggs (Mahershala Ali). While Katniss doesn’t trust Coin, she and Boggs eventually form a bond.

Later in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, Katniss shoots down aircraft attacking a District hospital while filming a propaganda video, and her furious response to Snow is captured on-camera. Of course, Katniss is still struggling with PTSD following the events of the two previous movies, and the strain of being a symbol of rebellion is taking a toll. After the Capitol’s hydroelectric dam is shut down by rebels, another interview with Peeta – who is looking increasingly beaten and withered – sees him warning of an attack on District 13, leading to the rebels and civilians seeking shelter underground as the bombs go off.

The finale of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 has Gale lead a rescue mission to save Peeta and the other captured victors. It goes surprisingly smoothly, but Katniss’ emotional reunion with Peeta is cut short when he viciously tries to strangle her, leading Boggs to knock him out. It’s revealed Peeta was brainwashed into the attempt on her life, which is why the escape went so well.
