He may not be the star of The Incredibles, but everyone loves Frozone – and there’s more to this cool cat than you might think.

In the era of superhero movie mania that we live in, The Incredibles and its sequel offered a heartwarming and satirical take on the reoccurring tropes found in superhero movies. To the delight of children and adults alike, the films by Brad Bird focused on all the behind-the-scenes details of not just superhero life, but the lives of their alter-egos. Over the course of the films, the superheroes go from having to live in hiding, their powers considered illegal to use, to being back to saving the world once new and dangerous supervillains force them out of retirement.

Though the main focus of the films is on Mr. Incredible and his super-powered family, a standout star remains his best friend and crime-fighting partner, Frozone. Voiced by Samuel L. Jackson, this frosty superhero has the ability to turn water from his body into various ice-based powers, just as long as he remains hydrated! Here are 10 things you didn’t know about one of the coolest superheroes around.

10 HE HAS HIS OWN CATCHY THEME SONG

Like all great superheroes, Frozone has a theme song, but unlike other super theme songs that rely on examples of strength and awesome power in a bombastic song and dance number, Frozone’s theme is as cool and chill as he is. Sung by crooner Michael Giacchino, the catchy jazz diddy was featured on The Incredibles 2 soundtrack.

Frozone has been Mr. Incredible’s clutch hitter since the early days of their friendship, when the odds were greatest against them and all options seemed spent. These lyrics are already classic: “Who’s the cat who’s always chill, when survival odds are close to nil, Frozone!”

9 HE DATED A FORMER SUPERHERO

While it hasn’t been established yet if Honey was once a superhero like Frozone, he did date one before he was married to her. Her name was Blazestone, and her abilities focused on heat control and pyrotechnic powers. This was in contrast to Frozone’s ice-related powers, which resulted in “opposites attracting”.

When Frozone had to compete for Blazestone’s attention by taking on Downburst, a superhero with atomic powers, he’d had enough. The combination of her fire and his cool-headedness had made their relationship lukewarm by that point. She would go on to form Beta Force with Universal Man as part of her rehabilitation after being arrested, which never sat well with Frozone.

8 HONEY ALMOST MADE AN ON-SCREEN APPEARANCE

Though she never appears in either Incredibles film, Frozone’s wife Honey feels like she’s part of the film if only because she provides dialogue that gives Frozone some of his most memorable scenes. One of the anticipated moments in the second film was getting to finally meet Honey, but alas, that honor may have been saved for a third installment.

Her character has already been designed by animators, and was provided as a fun extra when the DVD of the second film was released. It seems Brad Bird felt she was funnier as an off-screen character – despite being absent, she managed to have an incredible influence on Frozone, to much comic relief.

7 HIS POWERS ARE BASED ON HIS PERSONALITY

Like all the superheroes in the Incredibles franchise, Frozone’s powers are based on his personality. Like Violet with her shyness that denotes her invisibility power, Frozone’s personality is that of a chill guy with a laid back vibe and calm exterior indicate his icy powers. It’s a refreshing change from the stereotypical ultra-reserved and perpetually serious trope.

Brad Bird, writer and director of the films, once explained that only Samuel L. Jackson could bring the role to life because he had the coolest voice there was. He knew its mellifluous qualities would lend themselves well to Lucius, who has become an extension of Jackson’s own cool cat personality by proxy.

6 HE WAS INSPIRED BY ICEMAN

Taking a degree of inspiration from the pages of real superhero comics, to see Frozone in action on the printed page, one need only look to the X-Men series. His powers and abilities were based on Iceman, save for the fact that Frozone can’t turn his entire body into a giant block of solid ice.

Iceman was one of the original X-Men team members, and like Lucius, could manipulate the water particles in him and around him to create ice weapons, as well as ice sculptures. The goggles protect them both against their own powers of cryokinesis, from going snow blind, and offer a degree of anonymity.

5 HE APPEARED ON A TV SHOW

While it never received air time, the films inspired a television series that took place in the Golden Age of superheroes. A Golden-Age Mr. Incredible cartoon was made for television but only distributed to the special features of the DVD of the first film which came out in 2005.

In the special feature, there’s audio commentary provided by Mr. Incredible and Frozone as though they’re watching it for the first time along with the viewers. Their reactions are what you can expect; two superheroes actually debating the merits of leasing your likenesses for something you’re not fond of, which they don’t seem to be.

4 HIS POWERS DON’T ALWAYS WORK

Because Frozone draws upon moisture from the air to create ice structures from his body, if the air is too dry or he’s dehydrated, the process can’t occur. He can’t make them work if, like in the first film, he finds himself surrounded by fires trying to evacuate people trapped in a burning building.

When properly hydrated, Frozone can freeze bullets, shoot ice from his fingers, and cruise the city of Municiberg on long streams of frozen water. He can make frigid winds with his cold breath and freeze milk. It’s only when he’s dehydrated that he can’t provide the help needed to a distressed populus.

3 HE USED TO GO BOWLING ON WEDNESDAYS

A dedicated friend to his superhero bestie Mr. Incredible, Frozone used to have to spend his Wednesday nights lightening to police monitors. He would tell his wife he was going bowling, when in reality he’d be participating in the same nightly ritual he’s been doing since the Superhero Relocation Program forced superheroes into hiding.

Unable to use their powers to fight evil due to the collateral damage their brawls with supervillains caused, they had to get regular jobs and regular lives, which Frozone adjusted to a lot better than Mr. Incredible. Luckily, the world found a need for superheroes again, and he’s back to fighting crime in The Incredibles 2.

2 HE WAS THE ORIGINAL TARGET FOR KRONOS

Operation Kronos was the brainchild of the megalomaniac Syndrome, who wanted to build the ultimate Omindroid robot for use in battle. His aim was to use retired superheroes as combatants against it, testing it for weaknesses and making the necessary adjustments before he unleashed it an unsuspecting world.

As he tracked down all the Supers that were retired around the world, he made note of who would offer the most rigorous challenge for Omnidroid. Originally it was Frozone, not Mr. Incredible that was going to be the Omnidroid’s original target. However, Syndrome couldn’t pass up subjecting his childhood hero to his diabolical schemes.

1 FROZONE WAS ALWAYS READY TO RETURN TO SUPERHERO LIFE

Regardless of his adjustment to civilian life, Frozone was a Super at heart, and therefore kept his equipment at the ready for almost twenty years behind shelves and secret panels. His computer and plotting map were prepared to track down any supervillain scheme, and his special ice-skate boots were primed for speedy travel to thwart it.

In some ways, because of his acceptance of civilian life and his general contentment, he was also able to keep in better shape than his friend Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible), whose constant family struggles tend to make him put on weight. As long as Frozone stays hydrated, he can utilize his cryokinesis through the thick or thin stages of his life.
