The iPhone 15 May Be The First iPhone With A Never-Before-Seen Apple Chip

Apple is responsible for almost all of the iPhone’s main components. Starting in 2023 with the iPhone 15, it may take that a step further.

One of the iPhone’s strongest characteristics is its tight integration of hardware and software, and in 2023 with the iPhone 15, Apple’s set to make this even better with a never-before-seen chip. More so than any other smartphone, Apple controls almost every single aspect of the iPhone. Apple designs its hardware, software, and even internal components like the CPU and GPU.
However, there are still certain things Apple relies on other companies for. Apple gets its iPhone camera hardware from Sony, and it sources the displays from Samsung. This is also true of the iPhone’s modem. While Apple’s responsible for the iPhone’s processor and graphics chips, all of its wireless connectivity is powered by a Qualcomm modem. In the not too distant future, that might be changing.
Following years of Apple and Qualcomm feuding over patents and licensing fees, a new report from Nikkei Asia claims that Apple is set to produce its own modems as early as 2023. Numerous rumors have hinted at Apple’s desire to eventually make an iPhone modem, but this is the first time’s there’s been a firm release date to look forward to. As Nikkei Asia reports, “Apple is forging a closer partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. [TSMC] in hopes of reducing its reliance on Qualcomm… with plans to have the Taiwanese chip titan make 5G iPhone modems from 2023.”
Why An Apple-Designed iPhone Modem Is A Big Deal
Okay, so Apple wants to make the iPhone’s modem. Why is that such a big deal? The modem in a smartphone is responsible for a multitude of things. It’s the chip that enables a phone’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular connectivity — including 4G LTE and 5G. If Apple creates its own modem, it can integrate these things even more deeply into the iPhone than what’s capable with the existing Qualcomm tech. This could result in improved data speeds, better battery life, etc. Nikkei Asia seems to suggest as much, noting that Apple is working on “its own power management chip specifically for the modem.”
As expected with such a huge endeavor, it’ll take some time for these plans to come to fruition. Apple’s expected to produce testing versions of its modem using TSMC’s 5nm process, followed by its more advanced 4nm one when it’s ready for mass production. It won’t be until 2023 when Apple’s ready to ship its custom modem in the iPhone, but the company is clearly well into the process of making this a reality.
