Steve Irwin’s daughter, Bindi, reveals that the family is returning to Animal Planet with a new TV show starting next year. The Australian family was made famous in the ’90s when father Steve Irwin starred in a documentary series with his wife, Terri. The Crocodile Hunter became a smash hit thanks to Steve’s warm personality and his obvious passion for wildlife. Far from a dry and clinical look at the creatures of Australia, Steve provided a much more personable glimpse into the lives of incredibly dangerous creatures, constantly enthusiastic and excited about every single one of them.

Sadly, however, Steve Irwin died in 2006, after running afoul of a stingray while setting up a shoot. His daughter, Bindi, was already primed to follow in his footsteps, starring in a documentary kids show: Bindi The Jungle Girl. Over the past 10 years, the family has appeared in a few projects, from Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors to Free Willy: Escape From Pirates Cove, and now the family has announced that they will be officially returning to Animal Planet with a new series.

The announcement was posted on Bindi’s Twitter, in a tweet captioned: “Crikey! So excited to announce that we are officially returning to @AnimalPlanet next year! We love the @DiscoveryComm family!” It’s accompanied by a video of Bindi with her mother Terri, and brother Robert.

The video reveals that next year, “wonderful new adventures” will be part of a new show, although more details are not given. The video also references The Crocodile Hunter (also released on Animal Planet), suggesting that the series is going to be in the same style as the original show that launched the family to fame.

All three of the Irwins are passionate advocates for conservation and wildlife preservation, so this new show is sure to focus on their efforts in those areas, as well as educating fans on wildlife. However, the video doesn’t tell us much – such as where the show will be based, what it will cover, what kind of format will be used, etc. The most likely option is another wildlife/environment documentary style series, but this hasn’t yet been confirmed, so it is always possible that the family will be doing something entirely new.

It’s fantastic to see the Irwins returning to their roots at Animal Planet, and fans of the family and the original series are sure to tune in for nostalgia’s sake, if nothing else. Of course, it’s difficult (if not impossible) to capture the kind of exuberance that Steve was known for, so we’ll have to wait and see if this new Irwin show can capture a new audience without him.
