The Joker is Fighting Climate Change Instead of Batman

Warning! Spoilers ahead for “A Better Tomorrow” from Batman: The World

It turns out the Joker may not want to watch the world burn after all, as a recent Batman story from DC Comics sees him inspired to help a group of German climate change activists take down those hurting the environment. While the story, which appears in the international anthology Batman: The World, may not be canon, it is still refreshing to see the Joker get passionate about something other than mayhem and chaos.

Batman: The World is a collection of 14 comic stories that each take place in a different country, with every individual story written and drawn by creators from that country. The German contribution, “A Better Tomorrow,” is written by Benjamin von Eckartsberg with art by Thomas von Kummant. The story sees two climate change activists, Reinhard and Hannah, arriving at a chemical company CEO’s cabin in the Bavarian Alps, where they encounter the Crown Prince of Crime. Joker really embraces his new German surroundings, dressing his henchmen up as Perchten, creatures from local folklore. He also excitedly proclaims that “the Germans are so sensible and joyless. They need the Joker!”

Hannah and Reinhard are shocked to learn that Joker has brought them there because he has been inspired by their group, A Better Tomorrow, the country’s most radical climate protection movement. The problem is, he doesn’t think that they are radical enough. He thinks their demonstrations and words are “somewhat weak” and that in order to enact enact real change, they need to take more extreme steps. He has kidnapped the chemical company CEO and strapped a bomb to his chest, and wants to give the detonator over to Hannah and Reinhard. When they protest that they are not murderers, Joker cites the French Revolution, saying that it was so successful because it “let the heads of nobility roll. And who are today’s nobility? Politicians and CEOs. The more heads that roll, the faster and more sweeping comes change.”

There have been a few instances in DC Comics where Joker has pursued nobler ends than his regular goals of death and destruction. In the Elseworlds tales Batman: White Knight, Joker reforms and tries to save Gotham City from Batman’s violent methods. In actual DC Comics continuity, the massive 2020 crossover event Dark Nights: Death Metal, Joker is among the many DC villains who join forces with the good guys to fight off the Batman Who Laughs and save the Multiverse.

While Joker’s goals might be admirable in this instance, they still do not justify the means. Even though he convinces Hannah that the extreme step of killing CEOs is necessary, Joker is unable to sway Reinhard and thus has him killed. That’s when Batman shows up, knocks the Joker out, takes the bomb and drags the villain back to Gotham. However, the Joker always has an ace up his sleeve, and it’s revealed to Hannah that a second bomb was planted on the CEO, which she detonates. Although Batman may have put the Joker behind bars, the Clown Prince of Crime has successfully recruited a new soldier in his war against climate change.
