Baloo is a beloved character from The Jungle Book. He’s voiced by Phil Harris in the 1967 film, and the fun-loving, easygoing, lovable bear had plenty of witty and funny quotes throughout the film. “You better believe it!” is among his favorite sayings. Baloo was ready to adopt Mowgli and raise him as his own out in the jungle, and proved to be a wonderful “papa bear.”

Mowgli wound up at the man village eventually, but he’ll always remember his buddy, Baloo. The two made a great pair, and Baloo taught him about the “bare necessities,” as well as how to fight, and was a true hero for saving young Mowgli from Shere Khan.

10 “Can’t A Guy Make One Mistake?”

There definitely isn’t room for mistakes in the jungle, as Bagheera points out. Baloo is ready to keep Mowgli and raise him as his own, but Bagheera is trying to convince him to take Mowgli back to the man village, for Mowgli’s own good. Baloo is reluctant, not wanting to let Mowgli go.

Granted, mistakes are allowed, but Mowgli was kidnapped by monkeys on Baloo’s watch, which is what Bagheera points out, prompting the above response from Baloo. Poor Baloo really did care about Mowgli and he tried his best, but there were too many dangers in the jungle.

9 “Come On, Baggy, Get With The Beat!”

Baloo pulls Bagheera’s tail while saying the above quote. Baloo certainly thought of Bagheera as a killjoy, to some degree, and tried to get him to loosen up, especially when it concerned Mowgli’s future.

Bagheera missed the opportunity to jam out alongside Baloo and Mowgli to an iconic song like “The Bare Necessities,” though he later made up for it in the film’s ending by singing the song along with Baloo as they made their way back into the jungle.

8 “Man Village? They’ll Ruin Him. They’ll Make A Man Out Of Him!”

Unfortunately, nothing can stop Mowgli from growing up. Baloo can’t magically turn Mowgli into a bear so that he wouldn’t have to go to the man-village. This quote is quite sweet, actually, as Baloo wanted him to stay young forever so they could play around and spend their days doing whatever they wanted in the jungle.

Mowgli loved the jungle and to have fun just as much as Baloo, which made them a great pair. No wonder Baloo didn’t want Mowgli to leave.

7 “Aw, I Was Just Taking Five. You Know, Playing It Cool. But He Was Too Easy.”

Not long after Baloo wakes up, following Shere Khan’s attack upon him, Mowgli tells Baloo how worried they all were about him. Baloo, naturally, plays it “cool” and reassures Mowgli that it wasn’t a big deal, even though Shere Khan got in a few good hits and Baloo surely had to be at least a little sore.

Baloo isn’t really one to complain, though, and he’d rather deal with his injuries on his own instead of making Mowgli worry. That’s just the kind of “papa bear” he is.

6 “Man, That’s What I Call A Swinging Party!”

After escaping the old ruins with Mowgli and Bagheera, leaving behind King Louie and his disciples, Baloo happily declares the above line. He was on a mission, but he couldn’t help himself and went along to the beat, singing along with King Louie and joining in on the party.

Baloo’s always up for a good time, and though he got caught, he and Bagheera still succeeded in retrieving Mowgli from King Louie’s clutches. Baloo combined business with pleasure in this case, and he definitely wouldn’t miss out on another party like it!

5 “Are You Kidding? There’s Teeth In The Other End!”

Baloo risks his life to save Mowgli’s, finding the young boy just in time to save him from meeting an early demise courtesy of Shere Khan.

The vultures help by getting Mowgli to safety, and one of the vultures lets Baloo know that Mowgli’s safe and he can let go of Shere Khan’s tail. Baloo certainly didn’t intend to let go and he had a point, the tail was the safer end of the tiger!

Baloo was pretty unimpressed by Mowgli’s fighting skills and took it upon himself to teach Mowgli otherwise. The scene with Baloo teaching Mowgli to fight resembled a father-son bonding moment, to a certain degree, and it is one of the most memorable moments between them, with Baloo singing “The Bare Necessities” soon afterward.

Baloo may have taken pity on Mowgli, to begin with, but by the film’s end, he genuinely loved the man-cub and was sorry to see him go.

3 “You Better Believe It!”

As well as singing “The Bare Necessities,” Baloo is also known for this particular catchphrase. Mowgli even repeated it. It’s a lighthearted saying and a memorable response on Baloo’s part.

Baloo has plenty of confidence and certainty, whether he’s helping Bagheera rescue Mowgli from the monkeys and King Louie or endorsing his own fighting skills.
