The Justice League Takes A Brand New Cosmic Name in DC Comics

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Justice League: Last Ride #7

In the final issue of Justice League: Last Ride, the greatest heroes in the DC Universe have decided to reunite for the long-term with a brand new cosmic name. While they had grown apart after some significant loss thanks to Darkseid, what was meant to be their last mission together has become the start of a brand-new era instead, seeing the League preparing to expand out into the starts, moving beyond America or even protecting the world on an international level.

In Justice League: Last Ride, the League breaks up after a simultaneous attack on Earth and Oa by Darkseid. While the Lord of Apokolips is seemingly defeated, it comes at the cost of Oa’s destruction, the Green Lantern Corps nearly being extinguished, and the loss of the Martian Manhunter as well. This leads to the League drifting apart, with Batman and Superman in particular developing some deep-seated animosity towards one another and their perceived failings during the battle. However, Green Lantern Hal Jordan brings the League together for one last mission, needing their help to protect Lobo ahead of his trial before the new United Planets coalition.

While this final mission is eventually revealed to be a ruse that allows Darkseid to return as an incredibly powerful Green Lantern, Justice League: Last Ride #7 from writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Miguel Mendonça sees the League eventually winning the day, trusting in one another once more. It also sees the resurrection of the Martian Manhunter himself whose consciousness bonds with the energy of the Green Lanterns, making him their new Guardian as the Corps begins to rebuild. Furthermore, the League decides to rebuild and reunite as well though they’ve decided to go with a new name: Justice League Universal.

It’s pretty exciting and a logical next step for the Justice League while truly showing how this recent conflict with Darkseid has changed Batman specifically. At the beginning of Last Ride, all the Dark Knight really seems to care about is protecting Gotham, having removed himself so far from his teammates that his only focus is his own city. Now, Batman is ready to trust his teammates more freely as they look to the stars and worlds in need of their help and protection.

In any case, it certainly seems as though Justice League Universal is a great name and it’s incredibly well-suited for the team of heroes. It’s a wonder they haven’t gone with this concept earlier in the primary DC Universe’s Justice League comics. Regardless of the reason, the Justice League’s new name and cosmic expansion is certainly a dynamic way to end the epic miniseries.
