The Justice Leagues Basement Hides An Awesome Secret

Spoilers for Justice League #66 ahead!

The basement of the Hall of Justice, the Justice League’s headquarters, harbors an awesome secret. In Justice League #66, on sale now in print and digital, readers descend into the depths of the Hall of Justice, to the headquarters of Justice League Dark, and learn the Hall has a secret, magical panic room!

Over the past few months, a new Justice League has been coming together, consisting of League stalwarts like Superman, Batman, and Black Canary, as well as new faces such as Hippolyta, Black Adam, and Naomi McDuffie. McDuffie’s parents had been visiting her at the Hall when it was suddenly attacked by the powerful Synmar Utopica. Batman ordered them into the Hall of Justice’s basement, insulting Justice League Dark while he did it. This was the last readers saw of Naomi’s parents—leaving their fates up in the air. Now, in Justice League #66 – written by Brian Michael Bendis, with art by Phil Hester, inks by Eric Gapstur, colors by Trish Mulvihill and Hi-Fi and letters by Josh Reed – readers learn they survived, all thanks to the Hall of Justice’s “panic room.”

The issue opens with Naomi and Aquaman surveying the Hall of Justice as it lays in ruins. Naomi is understandably concerned about her parents and takes off looking for them. Meanwhile, Superman, Hippolyta, and Black Adam fight the Synmar Utopica in the skies above. Naomi finally makes her way back down into the Hall of Justice’s basement, finding her parents alive and well. They inform her that John Constantine took them to a “panic room,” which John informed them is actually a doorway to Doctor Fate’s tower, which is outside of space and time. There, Naomi’s parents were kept safe when the Hall was attacked. Her parents try to convince her to stay with them, but she takes off to help the rest of the League.

Given that the Hall of Justice is a gathering place for the Justice League, it makes sense that there would be a large number of safety protocols in place. One of those would be safeguarding the lives of innocents who may be in the Hall, and this magical “panic room” is the perfect way to do this. Being the panic room of the Justice League, however, means it will go a step beyond, and it does – all the way outside of the known universe. But the existence of this panic room raises questions: what else could be hiding in the basement of the Hall of Justice? And have readers seen the last of the panic room?

The Justice League’s headquarters is an awe-inspiring place, as it should be, and now readers learn it has been hiding an awesome secret in the form of a magical panic room beyond the reach of the universe.
