Historical drama doesn’t get any better than The Last Kingdom, which is why the name Uhtred has become very popular online. The show has been dubbed Britain’s Game Of Thrones and Uhtred, its Jon Snow. The show which is set in the 9th century has been appreciated by many fans as the best expression of Bernard Cornwell’s novels on King Alfred the Great.
Alexander Dreymon, who portrays Uhtred, has also become the face of the show. His career on the big screens only started in 2010, but his stellar performance in The Last Kingdom has catapulted him onto the public scene in a big way. The main problem here is that most fans don’t know much about his life away from the show.
10 Growing Up With A Single Parent
Alexander Dreymon’s childhood is nearly similar to that of Uhtred, the role he plays in The Last Kingdom. He was born Alexander Deotsch to Wilson Dreymon and Loran Dreyman; Yes, his parents have different but nearly similar last names. His father was not in the picture, so he grew up with his mother, who was a teacher.
His mom’s life was adventurous hence Dreymon’s interesting childhood. He had to study in Paris because his mother moved there to take care of his aunt. He then moved to the US, the UK, and later Switzerland as his mother moved around a lot.
9 Career Aspirations
Growing up, Alexander Dreymon always wanted to be an actor, but his parents were not comfortable with his dream. During his teenage, he changed his mind and decided to be an astronaut, just like any teenage boy, but he didn’t take any step towards that dream.
His parents, however, thought he would have a better life if he became a surgeon, but that didn’t work out for him as he froze the first time he watched someone performing an operation. He then decided that acting was his calling and focussed his efforts on becoming an actor. When he completed his secondary school, he moved to Drama Center London and took acting classes for three years before moving to the University of Arts in London for further studies.

The Last Kingdom has not used multiple languages, but Dreymon would still be the show’s best hero if they did. He is fluent in German, his mother tongue, French which he picked up from his time in Paris and Of Course English.
His time in the Drama center helped him perfect his English accent, although it isn’t exactly the best when you listen to him off the screens. His multilingualism meant he doesn’t have the perfect English accent, which also made him the perfect fit for the role of Uhtred, who is supposed to have been brought up in a Dane family.
7 Horse Riding
When you grow up in four different countries on two continents, you learn lots of things, and horse riding was one of those things for Alexander Dreymon. While in the US, Dreymon lived in North Dakota, next to a family that had a horse ranch. He learned to ride horses, which came in handy when he finally landed the first career-determining role with the BBC. His horse riding skills, although basic, helped him fit in naturally as Uhtred.

Uhtred is a versatile character, which is why the producers needed an equally versatile and talented actor to fit into the role. Martial arts is one of the main hobbies Dreymon picked along the way during his adventurous upbringing.
He doesn’t exactly have a black belt, but he is still a well trained Martial arts expert, which is why his fighting scenes on the show are so entertaining. He didn’t just make the perfect warrior; he also advises the cast during production to make the show more interesting.
5 Early Career
Despite his perfect childhood and determination, Dreymon had a hard time landing major roles when he graduated from Drama school. He appeared in a couple of plays in France and the UK, but nothing big came until 2010 when he starred as Alexandre in the 2010 French film Ni Reprise ni échangée.
2011 came with Dreymon’s debut on the big screens when he got the role of Casper in the BBC’s Christopher and His Kind. in 2011, he also appeared on a couple of other films, including Resistance and Who’s Watching Who.
4 Awkward Moments
Alexander Dreymon likes his private life and rarely gets caught up in awkward moments. However, there was one when he was still a student at the University Of Arts. He was playing frisbee with his friends near St. Paul’s Cathedral.
They were playing naked, so when the frisbee landed in the fountain, they decided to race naked in the street to get it. It didn’t end so well as a police van came by and he was forced to hide in the bushes. He doesn’t have any known brushes with the law, though.
3 Other Roles Outside The Last Kingdom
Before becoming Uhtred in The Last Kingdom, Uhtred played Like Ramsey in the third season of American Horror Story: Coven. His time in The American Horror Story helped him prepare for a more demanding role. He also played Jeremiah in the 2014 vampire film Blood Ransom although he said he didn’t enjoy it so much as he is an early riser and had to stay up late while shooting night scenes.
Since joining the cast of The Last Kingdom, he has appeared in films such as Guys Reading Poems, Heartlock, and the 2020 film Horizon Line. His time in The Last Kingdom has, however, been the most significant time in his career.
2 His Love Life
Unlike Uhtred, who has always been lucky with girls, Dreymon isn’t. He portrayed Casper, a gay man in 2011 on Christopher and His Kind, leading to some speculations that he was gay, but he dismissed the claims. He was also linked with the Greek actress Tonia Sotiropoulou, the Bond Girl of Skyfall 2012.
The relationship is believed to have ended before Uhtred took up his role in The Last Kingdom. There was also speculation that he was dating Eliza Butterworth, who plays Lady Aelswith in the show, but Butterworth seems to be in a relationship with someone else, meaning they may just be friends.
1 Being A Celebrity
Dreymon hasn’t said much about the dream role he wants to play in life, but it obvious he enjoys being Uhtred in The Last Kingdom and all the publicity that comes with it. It is definitely the role that will shape the rest of his career, and his whole life seems to have prepared him for it.
He confessed in an interview that he doesn’t like it when people point and call him out in public because of his role. He once denied being Uhtred when people claimed to have seen him on TV while he was on the tube.
