The Last Of Us Part 2s Abby Wins Best Performance At The Game Awards

Laura Bailey, the voice actor behind Abby, has been rewarded with the Best Performance award in the Game Awards for her performance in The Last Of Us Part II. The Game Awards combine the best games of 2020 with the most exciting new releases of 2021, and fans can track all the big new reveals right here.

The Last of Us Part II is certainly one of the biggest contenders in the Game Awards this year. Going into the event, the controversial action game had the most award nominations under its belt, including Game of the Year. This is despite the hatred that has been heaped upon the title since its release back in June. Players were outraged by the story, particularly concerning its treatment of beloved characters from the previous game. This controversy didn’t stop it from getting critical acclaim, though; numerous reviewers consider it a masterclass in the blending of storytelling and gameplay.

The Game Awards clearly agree, and have commemorated Laura Bailey for her role as the game’s antagonist Abby. Abby is one of the most divisive characters in the game, and her role in the storyline has been treated with equal parts reverence and malice. The violently polarized reactions to her character can certainly be taken as proof that her character was compelling. Bailey’s performance in the role was clearly a significant part of what fans responded to, and it’s good to see her getting credit for her role. This is especially true because the actor has, in the past, received death threats for her portrayal of the character, a shameful and disgusting response from the community’s most onerous members.

With all the technical work that goes into video games, it can be easy to forget how important voice acting can be. These actors, and the characters they portray, can resonate with players in some powerful ways. For instance, The Outer Worlds’ Parvati Holcomb became a champion for asexual and bisexual players, and her thoughtful portrayal by Ashly Burch carried that home for a lot of people.

Laura Bailey beat some stiff competition for the voice acting award this year. Regardless of one’s feelings about the action game, her performance does speak for itself, and it’s good to see her getting the respect she deserves. 2020 was a good year for games, and just about every category this year is chock full of excellent titles. A lot of great games and voice actors are getting passed over, but with a year this good, a nomination alone is a win. But all things considered, it would be hard to say that Bailey’s performance in The Last Of Us Part II wasn’t worth celebrating.
