The Lego Movie 2 Release Date Pushed to 2019

One of 2014’s biggest hits was a little film that made a rather large impression on fans and critics alike. The Lego Movie, written and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, was a surprisingly huge success at the box office, earning more than $257 million in North America and $469 million worldwide. Domestically it even placed fifth overall for the year, behind huge franchise films like The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Yet the film also won numerous awards, including an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for “Everything Is Awesome.” So a sequel was already all but assured when it was announced for 2017, but then two spinoff films later took its place on the schedule. The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie are currently scheduled for next year, and they were to be followed by the long-awaited The Lego Movie 2 in 2018 – yet that last part has changed.

Deadline is reporting that The Lego Movie 2 is moving yet again to February 8th, 2019. There’s no word yet on why the sequel has been moved once more, but in an interesting tidbit it’ll now release almost five years to the day of the original. And the news comes with Warner Bros also changing the release dates for disaster film Geostorm, comedy Bastards and the Ben Affleck-directed Live By Night.

While the schedule move for The Lego Movie 2 is surprising, it’s also entirely understandable. Lord and Miller are writing the sequel, but the two have also been very busy as of late penning Sony’s animated Spider-Man film and a treatment for Warner Bros’ film The Flash. Not to mention they’ve also been getting ready to direct Star Wars’ Han Solo anthology film (which, incidentally, is scheduled to be released a week after The Lego Movie 2 was planned to debut in 2018).

Lord and Miller turned in the script for the sequel last November though, so it’s more likely the film just needs more time in development while all the kinks are worked out for The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie. Sending those two films off right, which requires a lot of animation work, seems to be more important to Warner Bros than releasing a sequel to the original Lego movie.

The LEGO Batman Movie opens in U.S. theaters on February 10th, 2017, followed by Ninjago on September 22nd, 2017, The LEGO Movie Sequel on February 8th, 2019 and Billion Brick Race on May 24th, 2019.
