The Lord of the Rings is filled with many fantastic characters. Everybody is wonderfully fleshed out, everyone gets their own little subplot, and everyone gets some type of character arc. It’s fantastic writing. But as is often the case with book adaptations, much is lost in the adaptation process.

When it comes to protagonists, The Lord of the Rings is perfectly split between Frodo and Aragorn. Frodo is arguably the “hero” of the story, but viewers could certainly make a claim for Aragorn as well. And these are ten things that casual fans and movie-watchers may not know about Aragorn.

10 He Is Descended From Elves

The movies clearly portray Aragorn having some kind of relationship with the Elves. However, it doesn’t go into very much detail. Aragorn is a distant descendant of Elros Tar-Minyatur, a half elf and the first King of Númenor.

Númenor is a special island that was raised by the Gods of Middle-earth and inhabited by men. Elros Tar-Minyatur is the son of Eärendil and Elwing, as is another character of importance.

9 He Is Distantly Related To Elrond

Elrond was also born to Eärendil and Elwing in the First Age. In fact, he was the twin brother of Elros Tar-Minyatur, making Aragorn a distant relative of Elrond. At the end of the First Age, the half elves Elros and Elrond were given the choice to be “identified” as either a Man or an Elf.

Elros chose to live as a Man, becoming Elros Tar-Minyatur and leading Númenor. Elrond chose to live as an Elf and became a captain under the High King of the Elves of the West, Gil-galad.

8 Aragorn Was Raised In Rivendell

Owing to his lineage, Aragorn was allowed to reside in Rivendell. The Lord of the Rings often details Aragorn’s past with Elrond and Arwen, but again, fails to go into heavy detail.

Aragorn’s father Arathorn was killed by orcs when Aragorn was just two years old, and his mother took him to Rivendell to be raised and protected by Elrond. She requested that his true lineage be kept a secret, as he would be hunted by the forces of Sauron should it become public knowledge.

7 Aragorn Was Raised With The Name Estel

While being raised in Rivendell, Aragorn was given the name Estel to help protect his identity as an heir of Isildur.

“Estel” is the Sindarin (Elvish) word for “hope” or “trust,” which is certainly fitting seeing as how Aragorn was fated to reignite the Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor. It wasn’t until Aragorn was 20 years old that he learned the truth from Elrond, and Elrond gave him the Shards of Narsil to honor his legacy as Isildur’s heir.

6 Aragorn Is A Dúnedain

Viewers who have never seen the extended edition of The Two Towers may not know of Aragorn’s true lineage. The theatrical editions would have viewers believe that Aragorn is a 40-something man, and while that’s kind of the case, the truth is far more complex.

Aragorn is a Dúnedain, a special race of men descended from the Men of Númenor. They are taller than “lesser men” and “blessed” with longer life. Aragorn is actually 87 years old in The Two Towers, as he tells Éowyn in the extended edition.

5 Chieftain Of The Dúnedain

Aragorn was not just a wandering man known as Strider – he was actually the 16th Chieftain Of The Dúnedain. The title is hereditary, being passed down through the heirs of Isildur.

Arador gave birth to Arathorn II in TA 2873, and he became Chieftain Of The Dúnedain in TA 2930. Arathorn II fathered Aragorn, and Aragorn officially became the the 16th Chieftain Of The Dúnedain upon his father’s death in TA 2933.

4 The Sceptre of Annúminas

When Aragorn becomes King of Gondor and Arnor, he is given the Sceptre of Annúminas by Elrond.

This sceptre has a rich history, having been wielded by the Lords of Andúnië in Númenor. It was modeled after the King’s sceptre. It was brought to Middle-earth by Elendil, and it became tradition for the Kings of Arnor to wield the sceptre. It is the oldest artifact of Man in Middle-earth, and it’s held in Rivendell by Elrond. It was withheld from Aragorn until he became King of Gondor and Arnor.

3 Aragorn Has History With Gollum

Even the extended versions of the films exclude numerous details from the books, including Aragorn’s hunt for Gollum. In the novel, Aragorn is tasked by Gandalf to hunt Gollum.

He hunted the creature throughout North Middle-earth (known as Rhovanion) and eventually captured him in the Dead Marshes. He brought Gollum to Mirkwood, where he was questioned by Gollum about the Ring. However, Gollum later escaped thanks to the forces of Sauron.

2 He Was Known As King Elessar

Once Aragorn was crowned King, he was not known as King Aragorn. He was actually King Elessar (or King Elessar Telcontar), a name that was given to him by Galadriel.

“Elessar” means “elfstone” in Quenya (another form of Elvish), and it refers to a special jewel that was given to him by Galadriel in Lothlorien. In the film, the Elfstone is replaced by the Evenstar, which is given to Aragorn by Arwen.

1 His Name Means Revered King

Aragorn has a Kingly name. Quite literally. Like Aragorn himself, his name is of Elvish descent, as it is of Sindarin origin.

The name means Revered King, and it’s a compound name stemming from two separate words. “Ara” means “King,” and “ngorn” means “revered.” Putting them together creates Ara(n)gornm or Revered King. It’s very fitting.
