The Lord of the Rings features a wide cast of beloved characters, but Gimli is truly the one who rules them all when it comes to memorable quotes.

The Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest stories that has ever graced our world, thanks in large part to an excellent story and some incredible world-building by master author J.R.R. Tolkien. The man spent years crafting a rich history, backstory, and even the languages that make up the foundation of Middle Earth and its many legends. This allowed him to craft an assortment of colorful and eclectic characters far removed from other fantasy tropes.

Gimli, son of Glóin is one such character that quickly became a fan favorite. As a member of the Company of the Ring, Gimli was tasked with aiding Frodo Baggins in his quest to destroy the One Ring, which was forged by the mysterious and supremely evil Dark Lord Sauron. Like all the characters, his path diverged greatly within the story, leading to some incredible experiences that just so happened to forge the best quotes. The following is an updated list of Gimli’s ultimate one-liners spanning the three Lord of the Rings films.

Although all the characters in the trilogy have a wealth of important dialogue to draw on, they leave much of the humorous quotes to Gimli. 15 “…And My Axe!”

The Council of Elrond was one of the most iconic and powerful scenes of the entire LOTR trilogy, especially for fans who grew up reading (and re-reading) Tolkien’s novels. In the scene, the Fellowship of the Ring swears themselves to Frodo and the journey of the Ring.

Aragorn gets the ball rolling by swearing, “If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword.” Legolas continues with, “And you have my bow.” Not to be left out, Gimli finishes with this quote, thereby completing everyone’s favorite triumvirate within the series.

Gimli’s presence in the Fellowship was both welcome and tiresome at the same time. Dwarves had a penchant for being uncooperative and notoriously difficult, especially when they were forced to work with Elves. On the flip-side, they were often discriminated against because of their size, not to mention stereotypes revolving around greed and selfishness.

None of these elements helped when Gimli attempted to bring his opinion to the table. When the Fellowship first started out, the wise wizard Gandalf the Grey had them taking the long way around in order to avoid the haunted Mines of Moria. Gimli began this quote which led directly into that assumption, much to Gandalf’s apprehension.

In the world that Tolkien created for The Lord of the Rings, Moria is considered one of the wonders of Middle-Earth. Also known as Khazad-dûm, Moria runs under and through the Misty Mountains and was once the greatest Dwarven city in all of Middle-Earth.

Gimli knows much of Moria’s history – the amazing ancient city founded by Dwarves, which he shares with Legolas. He evokes a vivid image that is immediately soured by the nightmare reality of a city overrun by vile Orcs, as well as an ominous creature of “shadow and flame.”

12 “Let Them Come! There Is One Dwarf Yet In Moria Who Still Draws Breath!”

Tragically, the Moria that Gimli remembers is not the Moria that exists when the Fellowship pays a visit. The Dwarves within were either killed or driven out of Moria by Orcs and the fearsome, terrifying Balrog of Morgoth. When the Goblins start breaking down the doors to get to the Fellowship, Gimli readies himself for battle and steels his resolve with this powerful quote.

Long after Sauron’s forces were defeated, Durin VII led the Dwarves back to Moria where they all sealed themselves into the tunnels so they could not lose their ancient city again. There the Dwarves remained, “until the world grew old and the Dwarves failed and the days of Durin’s race were ended.”

11 “Nobody Tosses A Dwarf!”

What better place to start than with this iconic one-liner? During The Fellowship of the Ring, the company was set upon both by Orcs and the fearsome Balrog of Morgoth in the depths of Moria. Whilst running for their lives, Aragorn helps Hobbit Samwise Gamgee cross a gap by tossing him to the other side. He then prepares to do the same to Gimli, who immediately bristles at the insinuation.

He protests with this quote before making the leap without any assistance and nearly plummeting to his doom as a result. If not for Legolas grabbing him by the beard, it would have been the end. In hilarious fashion, Gimli shouts “Not the beard!” before being pulled to safety.

10 “Well, Here’s One Dwarf She Won’t Ensnare So Easily.”

Gimli is known for thinking he’s somewhat more of a warrior than he may actually be. While he is a brave and valiant fighter, he’s clearly out of his league when it comes to facing down Elven-kind. This is apparent when he hears about Galadriel, an “Elf witch of terrible power.”

After believing the rumor that all who look upon Galadriel “fall under her spell and are never seen again,” Gimli says, “Well, here’s one Dwarf she won’t ensnare so easily. I have the eyes of a hawk and the ears of a fox!” A second later, he finds himself nose-to-tip with a steadied Elven arrow.

9 “Ishkhaqwi Ai Durugnul!”

When Gimli is speaking with Haldir, the exchange is somewhat tense. Haldir states that the Elves “have not had dealings with the Dwarves since the dark days,” which prompts Gimli to respond, “And you know what this Dwarf says to that? Ishkhaqwi ai durugnul!” Roughly translated, the insulting quote means “I spit on your grave.”

A frustrated Aragorn replies, “That was not so courteous.” It was one example of the bitter relations between Dwarves and Elves which was not made any better by the actions of Thorin Oakenshield and his dwarven company so many years before the events of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

8 “Henceforth I Will Call Nothing Fair Unless It Be Her Gift To Me.”

Gimli utters a line anyone would be happy to hear in The Fellowship of the Ring when the Fellowship sets sail down the river from Lórien and leaves the Elves behind. Gimli and Legolas are in the boats together, and Gimli says to Legolas, “I have been dealt a wound beyond all healing, for I have looked the last upon that which was fairest. Henceforth I will call nothing fair unless it be her gift to me.”

When Legolas asks what Galadriel’s gift was, Gimli answers, “I asked for one hair from her golden head. She gave me three,” which was one of the most beautiful and touching quotes of the entire story.

7 “Three Days And Nights Pursuit. No Food, No Rest, No Sign Of Our Quarry But What Bare Rock Can Tell!”

Racing across open tundra for days on end wasn’t exactly the sport of kings for dwarves, and Gimli knew it. When Merry and Pippin were taken captive by Saruman’s fearsome Uruk-hai warriors, it was up to Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli to pursue them before they had a chance to make it back to Isengard.

The Uruk-hai were physically exceptional and capable of covering vast ground at high speed. In order to catch up, the three would have to pull out all the stops, even if it meant Gimli might drop dead on the spot at any moment.

6 “Give Me Your Name, Horse Master, And I Shall Give Ya Mine!”

Gimli was a boisterous and bold fellow, and he wasn’t the most charming to those he considered to be rivals. Eomer of Rohan was known for being a no-nonsense soldier who got straight to the point, and that could rub a lot of folks the wrong way. After making their way into Rohan’s territory, Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli were set upon by exiled Riders of Rohan under Eomer’s command.

At a time when Rohan was being attacked from all sides (not to mention within), Eomer wasn’t about to sugarcoat anything. He demanded to know who they were, and what they were doing in Rohan’s territory, prompting Gimli to respond with this quote that almost started a fight.

5 “Don’t Tell The Elf!”

In The Two Towers, dwarf-tossing suddenly becomes a thing when Gimli realizes he needs Aragorn to toss him over a gap he can’t manage by himself. It’s an embarrassing moment for a stubborn and proud dwarf who wouldn’t have dreamt of allowing anyone to toss him over any kind of gorge.

His only stipulation for Aragorn is “Don’t tell the Elf.” Aragorn assures him, “Not a word,” before helping him clear the gap so he can begin hacking away at bloodthirsty Uruk-hai soldiers.

4 “You Young Rascals! A Merry Hunt You’ve Led Us On, And Now We Find You Feasting, And…And SMOKING!”

The quest to rescue Merry and Pippin took the greatest of all possible detours when Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli found themselves bumping into the resurrected Gandalf the White. Their plans changed in favor of assisting Rohan against Saruman’s Uruk-hai army. If Rohan fell, the forces of Middle Earth would be softened in preparation for a march on Gondor.

Following the victory at Helm’s Deep, the three ventured with Theoden and Gandalf to check on the status of Isengard. There they found Merry and Pippin raiding the storehouse and celebrating with various goodies and pipeweed, much to the chagrin of an exhausted and battle-weary Gimli.

3 “Well, This Is A Thing Unheard Of! An Elf Will Go Underground, Where A Dwarf Dare Not? Ohhhh! Oh, I’d Never Hear The End Of It!”

The battle for Minas Tirith would be a conflict far greater than the Battle of Helms Deep, and both Aragorn and Theoden realized as much. Their combined forces were not enough to stand up to the lines of Mordor, and that meant they’d need help. Elrond visited the camp to gift Andúril, the sword reforged from the shards of Narsil to Aragorn, but he also brought council. To up his numbers, Aragorn would have to capitalize on a curse first laid down by his ancestor Isildur to gain the obedience of a long-lost Army of the Dead.

The path into their underground tomb was a frightening one, however. Aragorn and Legolas soldiered in bravely, but Gimli found himself gobsmacked when he realized that it was one of the few underground places in Middle Earth that a dwarf would probably steer clear of. He wasn’t about to give Legolas the satisfaction, however.

2 “Certainty Of Death? Small Chance Of Success? What Are We Waitin’ For?”

After the long, bloody battle at Minas Tirith was complete, the combined forces of Middle Earth stood victorious, yet exhausted and diminished. The death toll was staggering, and neither side had completely managed to overwhelm the other. Behind the gates of Mordor, Sauron was preparing a second wave to strike on an already weary army.

Aragorn knew that the path to victory did not lie in military strength, but in Frodo destroying the ring. He devised a plan to call out Sauron from behind his walls by marching on the Black Gate, thereby making it easier for Frodo and Sam to make it to Mount Doom. Under normal circumstances, it would have been a suicide run, and Gimli suggested as much with this quote.

1 “Aye. I Could Do That.”

One of Gimli’s most touching lines comes at the very end of The Return of the King. Right before the final battle, Legolas and Gimli are contemplating the impossible task that lays ahead of them, and Gimli is the first one to break the silence. After three movies worth of comradery and friendship, Gimli remarks “I never thought I’d die fighting side-by-side with an Elf.”

It’s his way of showing solidarity and friendliness with a former enemy that he fought alongside during the most important war of the age. The once-hardened Legolas smiles at him and asks “How about side-by-side with a friend?” After a moment of contemplation, Gimli tells him, “Aye. I could do that,” instantly melting the heart.
