The Lost Symbol The 8 Smartest Characters

Bestselling author Dan Brown’s work has now been adapted for the small screen with The Lost Symbol, featuring a younger version of Robert Langdon, who was originally played by Tom Hanks in the film series. The story took quite a few liberties from the source material, although the outline remained around the same.

The Lost Symbol’s story centers on antagonist Mal’akh manipulating events that require Robert to solve various puzzles, providing plenty of times where characters had to be smart. A second season is set to arrive in the future, so it’s worth taking a recap of the smartest characters that the first had in store and how they factored into the plot.

8 Samyaza

The Lost Symbol The 8 Smartest Characters

While villainous mentors are more competent in TV shows like The Lost Symbol, Samyaza didn’t really appear to be that way. He had an interesting way to dig into Peter’s memories that initially seemed to work, only for it to be implied to not have done the trick.

Moreover, Samyaza got killed by his own protege, Mal’akh, which made him pretty pointless overall because his appearance didn’t have any impact. All things considered, Samyaza was a person whose supposed intelligence was built up but never actually shown in execution.

7 Warren Bellamy

The Lost Symbol The 8 Smartest Characters

As the architect of the Capitol, Warren Bellamy showed up whenever the characters needed help. He was smart where his job was concerned, having aided the heroes in the matters they needed.

He was a good companion whenever the protagonists were in a fix, which made him knowledgeable around the Capitol. Bellamy didn’t have any outright unintelligent moments, although he didn’t really get to prove that he was smarter than the rest either.

6 Alfonso Nuñez

The Lost Symbol The 8 Smartest Characters

More of a comedic character than a serious one, Alfonso Nuñez was nevertheless among the more likable characters in The Lost Symbol. Still, he had a jittery personality, in that he would fumble about without understanding what he was dealing with when things got too technical.

To his credit, Nuñez had good intuition, knowing when to ask the right questions that inadvertently allowed the likes of Langdon or Sato to pick up on points they hadn’t previously considered. Nuñez showed promise to have a sharp mind at times, but just not enough to contend with the others.

5 Peter Solomon

The Lost Symbol The 8 Smartest Characters

Fans of Eddie Izzard will find this performance much different from the stand-up comedy specials they’re used to seeing, as Peter Solomon is such a unique character. While Solomon’s knowledge in masonry and other areas was understood, they were mostly informed attributes.

Solomon was largely a person whom Robert or his daughter had to find, meaning he wasn’t all that smart during the present-day events. Of course, considering he was Robert’s mentor, it’s clear that Solomon’s intelligence is much higher than the normal person and he was able to enlighten Robert some more by the show’s end.

4 Inoue Sato

The Lost Symbol The 8 Smartest Characters

Sato accompanied Robert so much that they briefly resembled a duo from cop TV shows. She was shown to have a no-nonsense personality. She got the job done, but there’s no denying she got played by Mal’akh and appeared to have been killed by him at one point.

However, Sato was also very perceptive to danger, which not even Robert could see coming on a few occasions. She had a tactical mind that was better than others in her field, with the implication that she and Robert would continue their partnership by the season’s end because they were intellectual equals.

3 Katherine Solomon

The Lost Symbol The 8 Smartest Characters

The book had Katherine as Peter’s sister rather than his daughter as in the film, although both versions were just as competent. Katherine was almost like the female version of Robert, in that she helmed investigations on her own and had separate arcs dedicated to her.

As the sister to Mal’akh, she had an insight into who he was, which played into the plot near the end. Katherine was the one to stop Mal’akh for good, proving she had a quick mind when things were the most intense.

2 Mal’akh

The Lost Symbol The 8 Smartest Characters

Mal’akh should be the smartest of all characters considering he masterminded the entire plot by himself. What’s lacking about him is the fact that he had such outlandish beliefs that it’s difficult to reconcile his intelligence with how he came to the conclusion of his crusade.

Mal’akh does deserve credit for capturing the likes of Peter, Katherine, Sato, and getting everyone on his trail by leaving out a trail he wanted them to follow. He was a one-man machine in terms of strategizing and would have been a genius had he not been driven by misguided faith.

1 Robert Langdon

Robert Langdon may not be one of Tom Hanks’ best characters, but the actor brought his trademark likability to the role, and the character’s portrayal by Ashley Zukerman was just as endearing. As expected, Robert was the most intelligent character, having deduced what the ancient wisdom was meant to be and emotionally destroying Mal’akh with this fact.

Robert used rationality where the others didn’t, allowing him to gain the upper hand during arguments and have his way. His extensive knowledge and backstory with Peter Solomon gave him an edge that he made great use of, ultimately proving his intelligence so much that Sato offered him another case.
