The Magicians 5 Best Relationships In The Series (& 5 Worst)

The Magicians largely focuses each season on a major event that could change the world, end it, or change the state of magic forever – sometimes all three. As a result, the main characters frequently find themselves on important quests, leaving very little time for them to lead “normal” lives and build relationships with anyone outside of their group of questers.

In spite of that, or maybe because of it, most of the best (and worst) romantic relationships exist amongst those same characters. Some of the relationships in the series have a great foundation of friendship or exist to make the characters better people. Other relationships are so full of dysfunction and toxicity that the characters probably should never have been together in the first place.

10 Worst: Penny And Alice

The Magicians 5 Best Relationships In The Series (& 5 Worst)

Penny and Alice don’t really have a romantic relationship. In fact, they don’t even really have a ton of interactions in the series as a whole. Alice did, however, go to Penny when Quentin cheated on her early in the series. She asked Penny for a no strings attached hookup simply to get back at Quentin.

Penny was accommodating, but the entire situation was strange since they barely spoke. The two didn’t even spend much time working together on the various missions they’ve been a part of, and the same is true of Alice’s interactions with the Penny from another timeline.

9 Best: Margo And Josh

The Magicians 5 Best Relationships In The Series (& 5 Worst)

When Margo and Josh first met, they were mostly antagonistic toward one another. Even as Josh developed feelings for Margo, she continued to push him away.

Over time, the two developed an easy friendship. They could trade insults and witty quips without hurting one another and still get their questing jobs done. That friendship eventually evolved into a relationship. Despite Margo’s tendency to push people away, Josh still sees through her bravado, and the duo remains strong, even when it appears they’re on the outs.

8 Worst: Julia And James

The Magicians 5 Best Relationships In The Series (& 5 Worst)

Some fans might draw a blank when it comes to James. He only appeared in the series up until Julia discovered magic was real. Her boyfriend at the start of The Magicians, James was a nice enough guy, but not the guy for Julia.

Their relationship lands amongst the worst couples because being with James held Julia back. She could never fully be herself with him, though she treated repeatedly giving up things she loved as though she was growing up.

7 Best: Penny And Kady

The Magicians 5 Best Relationships In The Series (& 5 Worst)

Kady and Penny fell into a relationship while attending Brakebills. She was actually there as a student to steal for Marina’s hedge witches, and though Penny was hurt about being lied to, he didn’t give up on their relationship.

Likewise, every time Kady wanted to push Penny away, she still came back to him, revealing how much she cared for him. They were a little dysfunctional at times, but they genuinely tried to make things work – until Kady couldn’t find a way to save Penny. Penny’s death hit Kady hard, and without him to lean on, she spiraled.

6 Worst: Margo And The Grey Brothers

The Magicians 5 Best Relationships In The Series (& 5 Worst)

The elder Grey brother, Micah, was originally planned as a husband for Margo. As queen of Fillory, Margo needed an alliance with the Floating Mountain, so a marriage was arranged between her and Micah. It didn’t work out that way.

Micah’s younger brother Fomar actually had him assassinated so that he could become Margo’s husband instead. Margo was only interested in securing a husband because of the needed alliance, though at least Micah was age-appropriate. Fomar wasn’t just deceitful and murderous, but also still a child. The first relationship wasn’t built on anything substantial and the second had a pretty big ick factor. It’s lucky for Margo she didn’t end up having to go through with her wedding.

5 Best: Quentin And Arielle

The Magicians 5 Best Relationships In The Series (& 5 Worst)

During the episode “A Life In The Day” in season three, Quentin lived out his entire life in a little cottage in Fillory while trying to solve a puzzle on a quest. He and Eliot were partnered up for the quest, but they weren’t the only ones to live in the cottage.

Arielle was the daughter of a farmer. She frequently came by selling peaches and plums. When she and Quentin became close, she didn’t find it strange that they were sharing their life with Eliot as well. Arielle fit neatly into Quentin’s life with Eliot and their mosaic puzzle. Fans didn’t get to see much of her, but it was evident that she was good for Quentin at the time.

4 Worst: Quentin And Alice

The Magicians 5 Best Relationships In The Series (& 5 Worst)

Quentin and Alice have very much been the on-again-off-again couple of the series. It’s a shame that they were just so bad for one another.

Quentin and Alice typically brought out the worst in one another. When together they were more competitive and vindictive than they were when apart. Of course, when they tried to be friends after breaking up, they also had a hard time trusting one another, especially since they each had separate goals in their quests that often interfered with the others.

3 Best: Penny And Julia

The Magicians 5 Best Relationships In The Series (& 5 Worst)

The original timeline’s Penny didn’t have a relationship with Julia in the series. He didn’t know her particularly well beyond Quentin’s perception of her. Penny from timeline 23, however, knew Julia very well.

He and Julia had a relationship in that particular timeline, and when that version of Penny came to the show’s main timeline, he began to look out for that Julia as a result of his fond memories of her. The two became very close, and their friendship eventually became a romance. Every so often he frustrates Julia because he tries to protect her without letting her make her own decisions, but that instinct comes from his fear of losing her, just like he lost his timeline’s Julia, which she understands.

2 Worst: Eliot And Fen

The Magicians 5 Best Relationships In The Series (& 5 Worst)

Eliot and Fen were both thrust into a situation they weren’t fully prepared for, which would have made them a strained couple to begin with. Add to that Eliot not being interested in women, and it makes their marriage very difficult.

While Fen admires Eliot, it didn’t take her long to understand that there’s no romance between them. She still wants to be his wife and queen, but she doesn’t expect him to save her when she’s in trouble, and she’s still hurt when he explores the Fillory custom of royalty taking on an additional spouse. Eliot tries to do right by Fen, but the two of them just do not belong together.

1 Best: Quentin And Eliot

The Magicians 5 Best Relationships In The Series (& 5 Worst)

One of the most surprising relationship evolutions in the series is that of Quentin and Eliot. While Quentin, Eliot, and Margo did hook up early in the series, Quentin and Eliot spent a lot of their time bickering with one another up until season three episode “A Life In The Day.”

It was that episode that showed fans how truly great their relationship was. Stuck in Fillory trying to put together a mosaic in order to retrieve a magic key, they could have given up on the quest and gone their separate ways. Instead, they built a life together, growing old together, and raising Quentin and Arielle’s son together. Their relationship provided the foundation for Quentin’s drive to save Eliot’s life in season four, and many fans lament that the possibility for their relationship to grow in the main timeline was cut short.
