SyFy’s The Magicians was one of the more unique fantasy series of the last few years. Fans easily fell in love with the show and its unique characters. In particular, fans just couldn’t get enough of the charming and witty, Eliot Waugh.

Played by Hale Appleman, the former High King of Fillory always had something to say. As one of the more complicated characters on the show, Eliot always found himself in the show’s most interesting situations. Therefore, it is not surprising that he had some of the series’ most memorable lines.

10 “Becoming Me Was The Greatest Creative Project Of My Life”

At the beginning of the series, viewers got to know Eliot as the refined, suave, and worldly magician who just wanted to have a good time. Many assumed that he had grown up in a world of luxury and sophistication.

Yet, Eliot’s true origins were a little more modest. In the season one episode “The Strangled Heart”, he revealed his darkest secret to Mike: he was actually from a farm in Indiana. Eliot explained that it had taken everything in him to leave that old Eliot behind and become the Eliot he always wanted to be.

9 “A Golem Of Margo. A Margolem”

Eliot was a complete mess after Mike’s death. This is completely understandable given the fact that Eliot had to be the one to kill him. Unfortunately, Eliot’s coping mechanisms consisted of only drugs and alcohol.

Therefore, it was perhaps not the best idea for Margo to drag Eliot to confront her ex-boyfriend in the episode “Homecoming”. To everyone’s surprise, Margo’s former beau had made a golem of her. Eliot not really getting the gravity of the situation, hilariously remarked on Margo’s clay doppelgänger.

8 “Someone Is “Xoxo, Gossip Girl”-ing Our Sh*t”

One of the best parts of The Magicians was Margo and Eliot’s friendship. They just got each other. Therefore, it is not surprising that the two were able to have their own coded pop-culture conversation in the season three premiere.

Eliot tried to explain that the Fairy Queen was using Margo’s fake eye to watch their every move and compared their situation to that of the late 2000’s teen drama. Weird and hilarious, their exchange went down as one of the most memorable moments of the show.

7 “Bambi, First Rule Of Politics On Earth: All You Have To Do Is Say It, It Doesn’t Have To Be True”

Politics is complicated enough but it seemed even more ridiculous in Fillory. In the episode “The Fillorian Candidate”, Eliot tried to win back his title of High King. During the election, Eliot was unscrupulous and he had no problem both leaving Margo off his ticket and lying to the people of Fillory.

When Margo called Eliot out on his fake promises, he simply replied that just because he said it, didn’t mean that he meant it. Eliot quickly learned his lesson about dubious campaigning and lost the election. Instead, Margo won the election as a write-in thanks to her newly found friendship with a talking bear.

6 “Be Regal Miscreants”

There were many parts of being the High King of Fillory that Eliot hated but he always loved the pomp and circumstance. As one of his first acts as ruler, he had restyled the throne room at Castle Whitespire and he was eager to show it off to his friends.

In the episode “Divine Elimination”, Quentin, Alice, Margo, and Penny had just returned to Fillory. While still concerned about The Beast, Eliot encouraged the group, barring Penny, to just revel a little in the fact that they were the actual royalty of the magical land of Fillory.

5 “Alice Has Gone Full Harry Potter Part Seven/Eight Over There”

The episode “Divine Elimination” was full of great Eliot lines. This included his reaction to Alice’s epic showdown with The Beast at the wellspring. Although Alice had very little power left she had no problem confronting The Beast.

After being transported to the wellspring by Ember, Eliot and Margo couldn’t help but watch in awe as Alice took on one of the most terrifying villains on the show.

4 “This Isn’t Middle-earth, Quentin. There Aren’t Enough Noble Quests To Go Around”

As most graduate students know, mentors either make or break your future. Seemingly, even Brakebills wasn’t immune to this. In the season one episode “Mendings, Major and Minor”, the group found themselves duking it out for mentors during Alumni Week.

While Eliot and Margo were trying to get the attention of Alice’s Aunt Genji and her coveted magical retreat, Quentin sadly ended up with a mentor who cared less about wizardry and more about podiatry. As Quentin complained about his placement, Eliot wittily remarked that not everyone can have an excellent mentor.

3 “Listen, I Have A Man In My Head. He Is Looking For A Body And You Have One That You Don’t Even Really Want”

At its core, The Magicians is just weird. If there is one quote that really summed up just how ridiculous the show was, it was Eliot’s exchange with Hyman in the show’s finale.

In order to get everyone safely out of the imploding Fillory, they needed a traveler. Unfortunately, the only one they had was the former Pervert Ghost of Brakebills, Hyman. He wanted nothing to do with them. So, Eliot offered Hyman a chance to go back to the astral plane and for his body to be taken over by Charlton, the sweet former possessee of the Monster that was stuck in Eliot’s head.

2 “Peaches And Plums, Motherf*cker”

The Magicians just knew how to keep fans on the edge and no moment was more surprising than Eliot’s attempt to tell his friends that he was still alive inside the monster. In the episode “Escape From The Happy Place”, Eliot needed to find his most traumatic memory in order to find a way out.

Shockingly, the memory was him turning down Quentin after having found out that they had spent a whole a lifetime together in the episode “A Day In The Life”. Able to briefly take over his body, Eliot tried to convince Quentin that he was still alive by referencing that moment. Fortunately, Quentin was able to figure it out and stop the others from killing the Monster.

1 “Magic Doesn’t Come From Talent, It Comes From Pain”

The first thing that fans learned about magic on The Magicians was that it results from pain. First said by Eliot in the episode, “The Source Of Magic” after trying to reassure Quentin about his potential expulsion from Brakebills, it became a running theme throughout the series.

Magic wasn’t always good, pretty, or kind and it took the characters working through their own trauma to become better at it. The Magicians never shied away from dealing with issues like addiction, assault, and mental illness and they used magic as a way to explore those subjects.
