Jon Favreau shares original Mandalorian concept art of Baby Yoda. Just two episodes into the live-action Star Wars TV series, it’s clear the show’s biggest star is the adorable infant member of Yoda’s species. Saved as a surprise for a twist ending at the conclusion of The Mandalorian’s first episode, Baby Yoda (who has a proper name that’s a secret) stole scenes in the second episode and instantly won viewers over with his cuteness. Since then, he’s become the show’s biggest talking point, as audiences speculate about his role in the larger narrative.

Disney and Lucasfilm made the curious decision to hide Baby Yoda in Mandalorian marketing, meaning the character was nowhere to be seen on posters or in trailers. As such, the studio is now attempting to make up for lost time by belatedly tapping into people’s response to Baby Yoda as they continue to promote The Mandalorian. Earlier this week, official Star Wars social media channels began posting about “The Child” (as he’s called in-universe, for now) and today, Favreau got in on the fun.

Favreau took to his Twitter account to post a piece of original Baby Yoda concept art. The illustration is more or less exactly how the character appears in live-action. Check it out in the space below:

As indicated above, the “spoiler ban” on The Mandalorian’s first two episodes is now lifted, a week after Disney+ launched. It illustrates how different the landscapes of television and movies are, in regard to the public sharing of spoilers. For instance, there’s no way a Star Wars social media account would have shared a clip of Han Solo’s death scene one week after the Force Awakens premiere, but Mandalorian spoilers are now fair game. If anything, this will incentivize fans to make sure they’re up to date with the show as quickly as possible, so they don’t have anything ruined for them. A case can be made the mere existence of Baby Yoda isn’t that big of a spoiler, but the infant’s reveal was intentionally designed to be shocking. Those who aren’t caught up on The Mandalorian now have that experience altered.

Obviously, Baby Yoda is the crux of The Mandalorian season 1, so it’ll be interesting what else fans learn about him over the remaining episodes. The Mandalorian was hired to find Baby Yoda by The Client, who’s aligned with an Imperial remnant. Plus, eagle-eyed viewers have speculated The Client’s associate Dr. Pershing works with the Kamino cloning facility. This could mean Baby Yoda is either a clone of the real Yoda or someone Pershing (and The Client) are interested in cloning for their own purposes. The Mandalorian has demonstrated a protective nature over Baby Yoda, so depending on what the old Empire wants with the infant, there could be a conflict over Baby Yoda’s fate.
