The Mandalorian Dark Troopers Are Basically the New Super Battle Droids

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 8, “Chapter 16: The Rescue”

In Star Wars stories set after the Fall of the Old Republic, the primary grunt villains are human-driven Stormtroopers, but in The Mandalorian, Moff Gideon has created a new elite force of entirely mechanical Dark Troopers. These hulking robotic enemies pose a stronger threat to Mando, and they harken back to the prequels’ use of Separatist Super Battle Droids. With all of The Mandalorian’s connections to the prequels, Gideon’s Dark Troopers are essentially the Imperial Super Battle Droids.

Stormtroopers have always been the traditional soldier of the Empire and its remnants, but their competence is on par with the comical battle droids of the Separatist army. Any foe they faced was able to take them down immediately and without great effort. However, Moff Gideon has proved himself an innovator of the Empire, one not looking to repeat past mistakes and valuing efficient, tactical skills.

For instance, his strategic plan to capture the Child from Tython in Season 2, Episode 6 shows how formidable the new Dark Troopers are. Their name strikes fear into the hearts of their enemies, much like the deployment of Super Battle Droids did in the Clone Wars.

Both Dark Troopers and Super Battle Droids pose an added level of difficulty in destroying, generally being hard to overcome in large numbers. Many times in the Clone Wars, Jedi were needed to be brought in to slice through platoons of Super Battle Droids and clear the path for clones.

Similarly, Din Djarin has difficulty when facing off against one Dark Trooper in the Season 2 finale. When a whole platoon of Dark Troopers attack the command bridge where the gang is holed up, Luke Skywalker comes to the rescue, slicing through the Troopers. Super Battle Droids and Dark Troopers may still be defeated, but their presence poses an added level of difficulty in combat.

Gideon’s Dark Troopers resemble Super Battle Droids, in that they both have tall, heavily-armoured bodies. Dark Troopers are more humanoid in appearance and move with more agility than Super Battle Droids, making them an updated model of mechanical soldiers. Gideon’s Dark Troopers also have an increased strategic capacity over Super Battle Droids, who possessed limited processing abilities and relied on organic commands. Furthermore, the Dark Troopers and the B2-RP Battle Droid possess heavy firepower, as well the rocket power capabilities to fly in space.

The mysterious evolution of the Dark Troopers wouldn’t be the first time humans were enhanced and replaced by robots in Star Wars. Both the Dark Troopers and Super Battle Droids were created out of the need to replace inefficient soldiers, but Dark Troopers are a more evolved threat because of their increased agility and strategic capacity. Gideon seems to prize his Dark Troopers, grinning each time he orders their activation. With Luke destroying the batch of Dark Troopers on the Imperial cruiser, Gideon will be looking to create more of the next generation of super soldiers, innovating off of the Separatist groundwork.

Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers and Giancarlo Esposito. Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming now on Disney+.
