Star Wars weapons have long been a staple of fan collections and cosplay. Now, a professional cosplayer named Svetlana, half of the KamuiCosplay creative team, has shared the process she used to build an Amban phase-pulse rifle like the one wielded by The Mandalorian’s protagonist. A Reddit post shows the crafting process at top speed, but a full 23-minute tutorial can be found on KamuiCosplay’s YouTube page. While the rifle is modeled after Din Djarin’s, it would make a good addition to any Mandalorian cosplay.

The bulk of the rifle is comprised of EVA foam and PVC pipe, two relatively inexpensive materials that are cosplay staples. The other things needed to construct it are paint, a box cutter, an X-acto knife, contact cement, super glue and hot glue.

First, the blueprint, which is linked to in the video description, is printed out to scale. When every piece is cut out and taped together, the pattern for the rifle measures 150 centimeters (nearly five feet) in length. The core of the rifle is a PVC pipe with a 23 millimeter (less than one inch) diameter that is heated and bent to the correct shape.

The large shapes are made out of EVA foam, specifically pieces cut into shapes and glued together with contact cement. The foam is then attached to the pipe and its edges are shaped with a box cutter and a drummel. The details are created out of similarly crafted layers of foam. Meanwhile, flexi-filler, foam clay and thin layers of foam are used to even out the gaps and seams in the foam.

One of the most distinct pieces of the Amban rifle is the muzzle, which is also constructed with foam layers, glue, PVC pipe, a heat source and constant checks against the example’s details. More PVC pipe of even smaller diameters are added to the muzzle, barrel and scope. Many of the foam pieces are attached with glue or contact cement, but some are welded on with heat, which is also used to seal the whole piece. Gaps in the foam are evened out with water-based filler and texture is refined with layers of Flexbond. Plasti Dip is then sprayed onto the entire rifle.

Then it’s just a matter of painting. The creators largely use airbrushing, but some of the details and imperfections are produced with finger-painting or tiny brushes. Then set and spray varnish is applied to the project. Oil paints are used to add realistic details, and then more varnish is applied.

Svetlana describes the process of creating the rifle as “a giant puzzle, which [she] slowly had to piece together.” She recommends checking photo references from the show, other cosplayers and action figures to make sure the many little details are accurate.

The final Amban rifle takes about five days to complete. It’s a few inches shorter than Mando’s and some of the details, especially in the center section, are inexact; Svetlana herself admits it’s not a perfect replica. However, the effort and detail put into creating it definitely pay off.

Created by Jon Favreau, Star Wars: The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, with guest stars Gina Carano, Carl Weathers and Giancarlo Esposito. Directors for the new season include Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, Carl Weathers, Peyton Reed, and Robert Rodriguez.
