The Mandalorian Proves Anakins Phantom Menace Trick Actually Works

In one of The Mandalorian season 2’s starfighter battles, Din Djarin proves an Anakin Skywalker trick actually works. In-universe, it’s been five years since Darth Vader died, but it seems a part of him has lived on outside of the Skywalker lineage, seeing as Mando uses spinning as a way to shoot down a TIE fighter in The Mandalorian season 2, a move that Anakin perhaps thought was special to him but is actually more ubiquitous in Star Wars.

At this point, it wouldn’t be a new episode of The Mandalorian if the Razor Crest either wasn’t taking a beating or was in dire need of repairs. And so, before Mando heads to Corvus to find Ahsoka Tano, he returns to Nevarro in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 4, “The Siege” to get his ship back in working order, which he later uses in the episode to take on a handful of TIE fighters. Even though the ship is quite old – hailing from the pre-Empire days – it’s still agile enough for Mando to wield against the Imperials.

Towards the end of the battle, in which Cara Dune and Greef Karga already took out most of the TIE fighters, it was up to Mando to destroy the one that remained. So he reversed-course after piloting the Razor Crest up into the atmosphere, flipping it backwards, and charged at the last TIE fighter, spinning to avoid its blaster shots. The thing is, it actually worked. Given the fact The Mandalorian has referenced the prequel trilogy quite a bit, this scene was undoubtedly a callback to Anakin spinning his Naboo starfighter in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

Through a series of events, Anakin somehow ended up fighting alongside Naboo’s Royal Space Fighter Corps against the Trade Federation. When he was approaching the Droid Control Ship, Anakin started spinning to avoid being shot down – luckily for him, he managed to sneak by the ship’s defense system and destroy the core, ultimately defeating the droid army. It was ridiculous then, and it’s ridiculous now, but at least Star Wars has leaned into the absurdity of the prequels. Even when the TIE fighter pilot appeared to have locked onto the Razor Crest in “The Siege”, his blasts appeared to either miss or not impact Mando’s ship. So there’s some semblance of genius in spinning.

Obi-Wan Kenobi always referred to Anakin Skywalker as the best starpilot in the galaxy, so even though he had humble beginnings with a scrapyard podracer, he knew how to survive peculiar situations. After all, his spinning trick worked so well in The Phantom Menace that he did it again in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Now Din Djarin has done it in The Mandalorian.
