The Mandalorian Season 2 Is Right To Hold Back On Baby Yoda

The Mandalorian season 2 premiere episode was right to hold back on Baby Yoda. Revealed as a surprise in last year’s season 1 premiere, Baby Yoda instantly became one of the most popular Star Wars characters in the entire franchise. The mystery surrounding his backstory combined with his cute antics made him a massive talking point as The Mandalorian became a cultural phenomenon, and he’s set to play a key role in The Mandalorian season 2. Marketing materials leading up to the season 2 premiere indicated Din Djarin’s mission was to reunite Baby Yoda with the Jedi.

This storyline should factor heavily in The Mandalorian season 2 as it progresses, especially with Rosario Dawson reportedly joining the cast as Ahsoka Tano. However, the first episode barely addressed that plot point, instead telling a largely self-contained narrative about Din teaming up with Cobb Vanth to kill a Krayt dragon. Titled “The Marshal,” the episode was heavy on Star Wars references and Easter eggs, even ending with the much-anticipated Boba Fett reveal. One thing “The Marshal” was light on was Baby Yoda, but that’s ultimately a good thing.

While the show is called The Mandalorian, Baby Yoda is arguably the biggest star in the series. That would make it easy for the creative team to lean on him as a crutch, putting him front and center. The danger there is it would run the risk of overdoing it so early into the new season, which is something The Mandalorian season 1 was able to avoid. Following the old adage of “less is more,” showing a little restraint when it comes to Baby Yoda makes his portrayal on the show much more effective. Baby Yoda was of course featured in “The Marshal,” but it was mainly for cutaways of him looking cute. He didn’t really have a big part in the episode’s narrative.

If The Mandalorian was a movie series, things might have turned out differently, but this highlights the benefit of the TV medium. Jon Favreau and company have eight episodes to play with, so there’s no need to go all in on Baby Yoda and the Jedi right away. There can be a slow, gradual build-up to what viewers are waiting for. In turn, the creative team have opportunities to flesh out other aspects of Star Wars canon in meaningful ways, with “The Marshal” shedding light on Tatooine culture and continuing to depict the Tusken Raiders as more than just mindless savages. This approach helps make The Mandalorian a more well-rounded show, since it doesn’t go so heavy on the Force and Jedi a la the Skywalker saga. The Star Wars galaxy is a large place with the potential to tell all kinds of stories, and The Mandalorian is taking advantage of that.

Baby Yoda will undoubtedly become more of a focus as The Mandalorian season 2 moves along, particularly since Moff Gideon and the Imperial remnants are after The Child for unknown reasons. That will help balance out episodes like “The Marshal” where he’s primarily an adorable aside and not the main attraction. Din’s journeys see him travel to all corners of the galaxy, including backwater and remote planets where the Jedi are merely rumors. Not every world in the Star Wars universe is big on Force culture, so it makes sense there are episodes where it takes a backseat to Western/sci-fi action. The Force may be the most recognizable aspect in Star Wars, but there isn’t a need to make it prominent in every Mandalorian episode.
