The Masked Singer Pepper Talks Unmasking & Elimination

The celebrity formerly known as Pepper opened up about competing on The Masked Singer. In the latest episode, which saw a double unmasking, the Pepper was revealed to be Grammy Award-winning artist Natasha Bedingfield. On the same night, the Jester was revealed to be Sex Pistols lead singer Johnny Rotten. The Masked Singer is currently in its sixth season, with Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger all returning to the judging panel. Nick Cannon returned as host. The Pepper was first introduced as a Group A wildcard and got to perform three times before being unmasked. Other characters this season included the Octopus, Mother Nature, Pufferfish, Dalmatian, Baby, Cupcake, Hamster and Beach Ball. Their real identities, respectively, were Dwight Howard, Vivica A. Fox, Toni Braxton, Tyga, Larry the Cable Guy, Ruth Pointer, Rob Schneider and Mama June/Honey Boo Boo.

Many of the Pepper’s clue packages led fans to guess correctly that the star under the mask was a British singing star. This included an iPod, a device that was popular around the time Natasha became famous. The Pepper also talked about going viral recently, which referred to her hit song “Unwritten” being featured as a dance challenge on TikTok. After her last performance, Ken thought he knew exactly who the Pepper was. In fact, he was so convinced that he brought out this season’s newest feature, the Take It Off Buzzer. In each group of celebrities, a panelist has one chance to correctly guess the real identity of a character. If they guess correctly, the character will be unmasked and eliminated immediately. The panelist who made the guess will get 10 extra points towards the Golden Ear Trophy. However, if the guess is incorrect, the character keeps their mask on and stays in the competition. The panelist doesn’t get any points, and the panel cannot use the buzzer for the rest of the night. In this case, Ken was incorrect. He thought the Pepper was musician Sara Bareilles.

Natasha spoke with EW to find out all about her experience on The Masked Singer. She admitted that she wasn’t expecting her elimination since she had been planning for the next round of the competition. “It was weird because I was gonna do a clue package for the next day. And I was going through what the next song would be, going with the producers and just really talking it through, and making calls to publishers and things like that…Then I went out on stage and it was just me and one other person. I was like, ‘Oh no!'” Natasha said the main challenge of joining the show was that it came at the last minute. Since Natasha was a Wildcard, she didn’t have as much time to plan. She also wasn’t used to singing cover songs but ended up enjoying her song choices. They included “Jealous” by Labrinth, “Sign of the Times” by Harry Styles and “No Tears Left to Cry” by Ariana Grande. Natasha even said that the latter song was her favorite, and she hopes she made Ariana proud.

Natasha also confessed that her fans guessed that she was the Pepper right away. “My fans and people are just like sending me pepper emojis on Instagram. And I can’t tell and it’s killing me! I haven’t told family. I’m just being so sneaky. So it will be nice to tell everyone.” When asked if she thought she would win The Masked Singer, Natasha replied, “I kind of went in thinking I’m not going into it to win. This is really just a really fun show. But then when you get in, and the competitive side kicks in, then you think maybe you could win. But the other people are so brilliant. They’re truly great. It’s very hard to compare who is better with singing. It’s such a subjective thing.” Natasha also touched on the challenge of singing under a mask, comparing the experience to being an athlete going to higher altitudes. She explained how singing without the mask again was like coming back down to the lower altitude, which is much easier and “totally free[ing].”

The Masked Singer always casts a variety of entertainers across every season. Oftentimes, the singers are easier to guess than the other performers. Singers also make it the farthest in the competition a lot, for obvious reasons. One season typically sees multiple world-class musicians competing at the same time. So while it may be surprising to see artists like Natasha going home, it’s important to remember what these singers are getting themselves into. By joining The Masked Singer, they accept defeat while appreciating the exposure for however long they last in the competition.
