The Matrix Resurrections and The Matrix Awakens game is undoubtedly making longtime fans reminisce past experiences with the genre-defining franchise. Outside of the films, video games have been an avenue used to expand the lore of the series in new ways. But over a decade since the most recent one, what did these games offer fans, and do they still hold up in 2021?

By averaging the critic ratings of Metacritic and the Internet Games Database, let’s take a look at the three major Matrix video games. While Enter the Matrix, The Matrix: Path of Neo and The Matrix Online may not be for everyone, what they offer is worth at least lightly exploring. Plus, like the films, some entries also offer detailed controls that wouldn’t be in mainstream games for years after.

3. The Matrix Online – 59.5/100

Directed by The Wachowskis, The Matrix Online takes the concept of the Matrix system and gives it to the players. Now, real people can enter the simulated world as their own characters in a title that is described as a continuation of the story. The game was released in 2004 and is an MMORPG that lets players make their own character and pick classes, partake in missions and join different organizations.

While The Matrix Online has the standard MMO layouts, the idea of living in the Matrix in a canon world sells the story. Control-wise, players can shift from gunfighting to bullet-time/martial arts combat. Sadly, while the game was entertaining, dwindling support and mixed-to-average reviews led to the game’s servers being shut down in 2009.

2. Enter the Matrix – 60.5/100

Enter the Matrix was the first video game to be released for the franchise and was playable on PC, Xbox, GameCube and PlayStation 2. The game, which was written and directed by the Wachowski sisters, follows Niobe and Ghost on an adventure that leads them to crossing paths with Neo and Morpheus. While it contains some live-action scenes, with Jada Pinket Smith and Anthony Wong reprising their roles, the game is still a traditional third-person action game.

Control-wise, players can perform stunts similar to that of the films, complete with gunplay, bullet time and martial arts. Players can also control Niobe’s hovercraft, the Logos, to evade machines. Enter the Matrix is often considered mediocre, as the controls aren’t perfect, and players preferred to play as the cast from the films. That being said, the game’s story offers a lot for die-hard fans.

1. The Matrix: Path of Neo – 69.5/100

Of the three games released so far, 2005’s The Matrix: Path of Neo offers everything fans could ask for in a game — the ability to control the One. Path of Neo isn’t an extension of the series, instead acting as a greatest-hits of the films featuring some of Neo’s most exciting battles. However, the game also expands its crucial film moments. For example, in the movie, Neo takes the Red Pill when he meets Morpheus, but in the game, players can choose the Blue Pill when given a choice.

Path of Neo’s combat was also highly advanced for the time, offering combat controls akin to what Batman: Arkham Asylum uses. But by mixing action in with great gunplay controls, players can take on many enemies, even fighting the hordes of Agents from The Matrix Reloaded. Because of its controls, critics have said the game has a lot to offer, but that it is limited by the technology of its time.

The Matrix games have been far from perfect, but what they offer in innovation and storytelling make the titles worth playing, particularly for hardcore fans. While they are hard (and, in The Matrix Online’s case, impossible) to access these days, these games still take up an important and interesting place in the franchise’s storied history, giving fans a reason to look forward to whatever The Matrix Awakens’ Unreal Engine 5 experience turns out to be.
