In The Matrix series, it’s safe to say Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith is a scene-stealer, proving to be one of the most sadistic villains not just in the original trilogy, but pop culture as a whole. His ruthless edge, iconic lines and unsettling smile left a lasting impression on Keanu Reeves’ Neo, making him a formidable tyrant. However, The Matrix Resurrections turns Smith into a shocking hero, helping to save Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity.
What Happened to Agent Smith After The Matrix Revolutions?
Neo rewrote Smith’s code and got him erased from that iteration of the Matrix as the original trilogy ended, but in Matrix Resurrections, the machines created a new fake reality, curated by Neil Patrick Harris’ Analyst. Smith has been hiding out in a new form of code, taking on the form of Jonathan Groff instead of Weaving, but like Neo, he’s been brainwashed.
Neo thought he was developing games for Warner Bros., trying to ensure “The Matrix” property remained a hit, with Smith being his partner. As it turns out, the machines were manipulating them, trying to keep them from remembering their past because they had the potential to bring the new system down again.
What Was Smith’s Plan in The Matrix Resurrections?
Early on in Matrix Resurrections, when the agents came for an awakened Neo as Bugs and her rebels tried to free him from his Thomas persona, a firefight at their Deus Machina workplace also woke Smith up as he grabbed a gun. He remembered his wars with Neo and when Neo later came back into the Matrix, Smith leveled up. As Neo tried to find a way to get to an imprisoned Trinity (masquerading as a mother named Tiff), Smith, the Merovingian and exiled programs attacked.
They wanted to stay off the radar, fearful that Neo’s new vendetta would expose them and get them deleted in another purge of the system. This led to a brutal fight, homaging many moments from their scraps in the Matrix trilogy, but luckily, Neo used his telekinesis and other powers to blow the villain away. It left the audience thinking Smith was dead while demonstrating that bit by bit, Neo was regaining his full powers as the One.
How Did Smith Save Neo & Trinity?
The Analyst had a plan to keep Neo and Trinity under his thumb when the One came to broker a deal to free her mind. Trinity accepted she wasn’t Tiff, but the Analyst had “swarm” bots around to capture them and the rebels, knowing it’d allow the machines to keep Neo and Trinity’s bodies in Machine City so the bots could feed off their energy and find IO, the new Zion.
But just when it seemed like the lovers were about to be killed, Smith attacked, helping them out in a stunning move. It turns out he survived his fight with Neo and wanted the Analyst dead, as he hated being toyed with and oppressed again. Smith never let go of the freedom he had when he broke free as a program and in his rampage, he shot up the Analyst, temporarily rendering him inert. He joked that their deadly alliance had to come to an end, wishing the heroes the best before disappearing so he didn’t get caught.
Is Smith Really a Hero in Matrix Resurrections?
Neo and Trinity didn’t get a chance to thank him because ultimately, no iteration of Smith can be trusted. By Matrix Resurrections’ end, however, it did feel like because he saved them, they were allowing him to roam freely as they used their powers to build a new Matrix. It’s quite ironic to see him changed from an agent of control and someone who tormented the duo to someone who saved them, but clearly, he’s obsessed with being unchained and is willing to compromise.
That said, as much as Smith helped out, it was all selfish because he didn’t want a puppet master anymore after years of servitude to the mainframe. It even lent credence to him possibly being the ‘child’ of the Oracle and Architect from the original trilogy, and will certainly spark debates about whether he may really be the One.
