The anime Death Note is highly regarded for its complex and intelligent characters. Throughout the series, these characters find themselves caught up in the battle of wits of the century, revealing a myriad of personalities.
Though it’s not always apparent which of the Myers-Briggs Personality® types align with each of the characters, it’s an interesting lens through which to analyze them. Here’s what this system of personality typing can tell fans about their favorite characters.
10 Touta Matsuda: ENFJ
It really does make sense that Touta ended up being a “Protagonist” type. A young officer working on the team to try and track down the self-righteous mass-murderer Kira.
Touta starts rather timid and is seen as a bit a pushover at the beginning of the story. But by the end, Touta can pull his weight and seems to be one of the most heroic people on the team towards the finale.
9 Soichiro Yagami: ENTJ
As the lead detective under L, Soichiro, Light’s father, is a “Commander” personality. Diplomatic and, for the most part, level-headed, the commander-in-chief works insanely hard to collaborate with L and his team while considering keeping them all as safe as possible.
In trying to stop Kira, he even spontaneously grows gray hairs out of his head in a moment of immense stress. Soichiro takes on a lot, but he does it all to serve the people and country he cares about, a true hallmark of the ENTJ type.
8 Teru Mikami: INTJ
The chosen protege and worshipper of Kira, Teru, comes around in the second half of Death Note as a stand-in partner and second-acting Kira as a backup for Light.
Teru is an “Architect” personality–someone who builds their life around structure and rationality. They are quite introverted and are great at keeping to themselves, just as Teru is when he’s entrusted with keeping the dark secret of the duplicate Death Note. INTJ can be one-track-minded and incredibly serious as well and that’s Teru to a tee.
7 Mello: ESTJ
One of the gifted children that hail from the same orphanage/program as L, Mello is competitive, intimidating, and determined to catch Kira before his counterpart Near does.
Mello is an “Executive” personality, strangely the same as Light. Mello takes charge and is easily aggravated, willing to do anything to get ahead and proclaim dominance over his opposition. Aligning with his personality type, he’s intelligent and observant though very easily frustrated with those who deem to fail or succeed him.
6 Near: ISTJ
Near is from the same organization for gifted orphans as Mello and L. Essentially, he is the second coming of L. Near is a “Logistician”–just like L is. Near is much colder, younger, and less approachable than L but upholds the same personality-type traits.
He is focused, introverted, analytical, and self-sufficient. Near is confident in his abilities and keeps cool, unlike his much more ostentatious counterpart Mello. Thanks to Near, whose relentless presence surprised Light, the team can identify, capture, and convict him.
5 Rem: ISTP
As a Shinigami, Rem is quite a reserved, withdrawn supernatural being, usually preferring to stay out of things until they fall in love with Misa and care for her. Rem’s personality type is “Virtuoso.” “Virtuosos” are defined as introverted and observant, which directly defines Shinigami behavior in general, as they tend to watch from the wings.
On the other hand, Rem observes and decides to act instead, and this has a lot to do with their personality. Rem does everything they can to protect what they love to the very end.
4 Misa: ESFP
Predictably, Misa-Misa, an international pop-star and actress, is of the “Entertainer” personality. While she can be overly-focused on herself and her image as a part of her business, she generally cares about the relationships she has with others and maintaining positivity overall.
She loves being the center of attention, whether in a crowd or with a single person, true traits of an ESFP.
3 Ryuk: ISTP
Another Shinigami with the “Virtuoso” personality type, Ryuk, seems to take great pleasure in watching events unfold. Like any other Shinigami, Ryuk is generally inactive and doesn’t usually interfere with conflict. He would rather be a spectator instead.
While they aren’t actively mean-spirited, Ryuk prefers to observe rather than participate.
2 L: ISTJ
The government sends the mysterious genius L to track down and stop Kira from continuing their mass murdering. L, like Near, is a “Logistician.” He’s honest and introverted, fact-minded, responsible, and stubborn.
He takes his duty of finding Kira very seriously and logically undertakes this mission.
1 Light Yagami: ESTJ
The same personality type as Mello, Death Note’s protagonist Light proves that people can differ from each other even within personality categories. Obviously, Light is much different from Mello as an “Executive” personality trait. Patient, scheming, and smart beyond nearly anyone’s comprehension, the young genius can take control of nearly any situation through taking the reigns of control or stepping back and allowing events to fall in line with his planning.
He is strategic, thoughtful, and can be both introverted and extroverted depending on what is necessary for the situation. He brings anything he needs to the table to get ahead, whether it’s being kind, gentle, and sympathetic, or aggressive, assertive, and sacrificial. This makes him one of the most memorable characters in a series.
