The MCU Just Made Shuri Black Panther’s MCU Legacy

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marvel’s What If…? episode 6, “What If…Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?”

In Marvel’s What If…?, the MCU just made Shuri the keeper of Black Panther’s legacy, building a potential bridge to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While much of the featured alternate timeline sees Eric Killmonger and his plan involving Tony Stark to gain power in Wakanda, T’Challa’s sister is the one who is truly marked as her fallen brother’s successor, carrying on his legacy which she could very well do in the Black Panther sequel as well when it releases in 2022.

In Marvel’s What If…? episode 6, Eric Killmonger saves Tony Stark from the attack and attempted capture by the MCU’s Ten Rings, resulting in the two becoming friends. Eventually, Killmonger ends up becoming a trusted confidant and is quickly promoted as Stark Industries’ CCO. Working together, they ended up creating the Liberators, which were drones of Eric’s own design. However, their creation was all part of a larger plot to use the drones as a means to infiltrate Wakanda after he secretly killed the Black Panther, making it look as though Stark and the US government were responsible (before killing Stark as well). Appearing to the Wakandans as an ally, Killmonger fought his own robots while appearing to be a hero of valor, so much so that he gained King T’Chaka’s respect and trust, resulting in Eric gaining the title and power as Wakanda’s new Black Panther.

That being said, T’Challa’s sister was smart enough to distrust Killmonger, and she soon ascertained the truth about his true nature, including his secret murders of the original Black Panther, Tony Stark, and James Rhodes. Furthermore, she then goes to the equally suspicious Pepper Potts to team up so they can reveal the truth, and it’s here at the end where the Watcher closes the episode, saying that “Heroes are never really gone. They live forever, as do the ones they inspire to carry on the fight.” Clearly, this seems to be a rather poignant line in reference not only to this particular episode but also for the MCU’s future with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, potentially teasing and setting up a bridge for Shuri to become the new Black Panther in the sequel film, allowing her to carry on T’Challa and the late Chadwick Boseman’s shared legacy as a hero.

While it’s not yet confirmed exactly how Marvel Studios plans to honor the passing of the inspiring Chadwick Boseman and the equally inspiring hero he impressively brought to life on the big screen with the upcoming Black Panther sequel, passing the torch to Letitia Wright’s Shuri has by and large been the most popular and hoped-for option. Likewise, while this is pure conjecture at the present, the Watcher’s line about the legacy of heroes seems to support the idea of Shuri’s Black Panther quite well.

In any case, despite the episode featuring Killmonger’s dark rise to power in this alternate timeline, the ray of hope featured at the end is quite satisfying, especially considering what it could mean for the future of the MCU’s confusing main timeline with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While Killmonger may have the suit and the powers by the episode’s end, it’s Shuri who ends up continuing the true legacy of the Black Panther, and the same could very well be true for T’Challa’s sister in the near future of the primary MCU.
