The MCU Really Wants You To Give Up On Iron Man Coming Back

Marvel’s What If…? has killed Tony Stark three times in a matter of six episodes; is it possible that the MCU is trying to send fans a message? Robert Downey Jr. has not signed any further contracts to reprise his role as Iron Man, but ever since the character’s heroic death in Avengers: Endgame and the introduction of the multiverse, audiences have been looking for a way to get Stark back. What If…? may be putting a definitive end to those hopes and dreams, seeing as how half of the aired episodes thus far involve the untimely death of Iron Man/Tony Stark.

In What If…? episode 3, Iron Man is the first in a string of mysterious murders targeting Nick Fury’s Avengers Initiative before it can be actualized. In What If…? episode 5, Stark is a slavering zombie in Iron armor almost immediately after the outbreak of the virus. Evidently, his suit couldn’t save him from being infected and his undead counterpart is dispatched early in the episode by Hope Van Dyne and her army of ants. The title of What If…? episode 6, “What If… Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?”, is rather deceptive. In this universe, Erik Killmonger saves Tony Stark from the Ten Rings in Afghanistan. The pair strike up an ill-fated partnership that later ends when Killmonger murders Tony (who never became Iron Man) to further his own agenda against Wakanda. Ultimately, these are three gruesome deaths for the hero who was supposed to be the final cog in defeating Thanos; why is the MCU treating Iron Man this way?
